Trying to Get Pregnant

Questions to ask OB

I have my annual OB appt this week. Every OB visit I've had since I was 16 has been exactly the same. Pee in cup, height and weight, blood pressure, breast and pelvic exam, finished with a refill of my BCP for one year. This is the first time ever I am going in not trying to prevent pregnancy! So strange. I really trust my OB to give me all the info I need, but want to know if there is anything I should ask or if there is something you'd wish you knew in the beginning of TTC. My body is still regulating and adjusting to being off BC, I'm emotional as hell and feeling overwhelmed.

  • If they tell you to just have sec on days xx-xx of your cycle, ignore them.

Unless you have other health issues that might be an issue, or you don't know how sex works, there's not much to ask.
Son: Jackson, 11/02/06, stillborn due to PPROM and IUGR. Over the next ten years we had 9 miscarriages from 8-14 weeks. On May 18, 2016 my daughter, Ridley, was born. We're OADNBC.
  • I just had my annual too.  I asked about my medications (if they were safe to continue), what would happen once I got a BFP (in regards to when I would need to make my appointment), and how long we should try before coming back for tests.

  • If you want to make sure he or she is the right OB for the long run, you could also ask about their thinking on natural birth, epidural and csections.
    My TTC History:
    2009: missed miscarriage #1 at 9 weeks (trisomy 16)
    2010: Infertility
2011: Diagnosis and treatment (low sperm count, anastrozole for DH, clomid for me + IUI)
    2012: Baby #1
    2014: Baby #2
October 2015: missed miscarriage #2 at 11 weeks (trisomy 22)
    March 2016 BFP#5, due November 2016.

    My Charts since 2009

  • I just did this in June. I asked about my meds, and any possible complications as a result of a LEEP procedure I underwent last year. My doc told me that if we had sex EOD during my FW and weren't knocked up in six months to come in and see her. I like that she gave me six months instead of a year.

And my doc actually said "knocked up." I love her.

  • Like a few others have mentioned, I wanted to be sure we were on the same page about things like c-sections, induction, etc, and I asked about a screening for a few viruses/parasites just to be safe because of where I've traveled.  A few other things came up, diet, vaccines, etc. She told me if any of her patients insisted they would not vaccinate, she would tell them she didn't think it would be a good fit and refer them elsewhere. I wanted to hug her.

  • If you like your OB make sure you ask what their scheduling policies are. If he is in delivery will they move your appointment or have you see someone else in the practice? Is he almost guaranteed to deliver your baby or will it be who ever happens to be on call?

Pretty much this.  I just met with a new OB because I've always had my gyn stuff done with my primary, so I also went over concerns I had about my cycles off birth control, and what to do if the pain came back like it was when I was a teenager due to possible endo.  The med piece was big for me too.  It sounds like you're at a real advantage, care-wise, due to seeing the same dr for so many years!  Good luck with the visit and ttc!

  • Thanks all! Maybe I'll just read straight from this thread while I'm there. :D

  • I talked to my OB about our plans to TTC and he told me how much folic acid he wants me to be taking and also did some blood work. Turns out my TSH was elevated so now I take a thyroid med to get that to a better level for TTC/pregnancy. Otherwise all the advice was as PPs mentioned.
