Baby girl names...

I've known I've been having a girl for a few weeks now but still cannot pin point a name. I am too indecisive!!! A name is forever ( so it seems)....

Here's what I am thinking of:
Alana
Edith
Eleanora
Evangeline
Lorraine
Martha
Tabitha

Tabitha, Evangeline, and Lorraine are all front runners in the race but which one? Let me know what you guys think! Possible middle names would be awesome as well. I can't even begin to think of those!!!
:-??

Boys names were so much easier for us!

Re: Baby girl names...

  • I am definitely the wrong person to be responding to this since I do not like old-fashioned names. That said, Evangeline and Alana are pretty. Eleanora, Lorraine and Tabitha are nms. Edith and Martha=please no.

Yeah, I am weird... Love old fashioned. But thanks! I couldn't find a way to fit in Martha, so that's why that isn't a front runner, it was just my grandmothers name and she was awesome... too bad it sounds like a grandmothers name too. =/ *sigh*

I am totally digging Evangeline because of the princess and frog song too... Sad but true, that's where I heard it first!

Also, was going to go for the baby name board, but the bump says it's down when I try and click anywhere else then the DEC 14 saved link I have. But you ladies are more awesome anyways!

I totally get wanting to honor your grandmother. Maybe a middle name?

Yes, perhaps so :) Thanks for your input so far. Do you think it flows with any of my top three?

  • I would definitely go with Tabitha. It's cute and you'd have nicknames to go with it. For a middle name ... try a family name. Are there any middle names that are common in your family?
Here's an example ... My husband and I decided on the name Emily if we're having a girl. Only one we could agree on. And for a middle name ... Jane. It's my mother and my grandmother's middle names.
    Good luck!

You are going to get far nicer responses here on D14 than on the name board.

My favorite is Alana. I had a college roommate named Martha and she is one of the most awesome people I know. :)

What about Marta?  That seems more modern...  I love the idea of honoring a loved one.

  • Tabitha.

My neice is Evangeline... No one likes it even over a year later.
  • I like Evangeline and you can nickname Eva if you want a twist on it.

  • I personally love Tabitha! I suggested that name to DH if we have a girl. He vetoed, not a fan of old fashioned names. For middle names, I second the family name suggestion. We will be using my maiden name as middle name whether it's a boy or girl and my maiden name happens to be a (pretty uncommon) male first name.

If we have a little girl, her name will definitely be Evangeline, so it's hard for me to vote for anything else =) I love the idea of incorporating a family name, my grandmother's name is Eva so it's a perfect fit for us.

Out of your other contenders, I definitely like Lorraine (nn Lori) and I think it goes well with Martha as a middle name. Eleanora (nn Ellie or Nora) is also very pretty and goes well with Martha.

I personally like Eleanora. Ellie for a nickname or Nora. We almost chose Eleanor, something similar, for our little one but fell in love with Maisie. It was my husbands grandmothers name it is going to be our babies middle name. Maisie Eleanor.
  • Alana or Eleanora (love the nickname Nora)

  • Alana! I absolutely love this name and would use it myself but DH isn't sold on it :(
  • I like Eleanora, so many nn options. Alana as a far off second, the rest I just don't like at all. I think Tabitha would be in last place. It just sounds harsh to me with the th and the nickname Tabby just makes me think of a cat.

  • These are NMS, but I like Tabitha the best.  My friend just named her daughter Edith and we call the baby Edie which is actually really cute.

Every time I hear Alana I think of Honey Boo Boo.
LOL, Honey Boo Boo!!!! Oh no! What a person to share a name with....

Tabitha was from when I was in a women's choir and I feel in love with the name after all the girls I names I learned. It was off the list for a while when one of my coworkers did the "that's a strippers name google it" (btw, google it and click images if you want to see how much it scarred me for quite a few months), but after thinking it over I was like "Screw it, I'll raise my kid better then that". :-P

Lorraine is my sisters mn, I've always thought it was insanely beautiful. My dad came up with the greatest girls names. In fact, I should probably ask him what he would have called a third daughter. LOL

I would do family names but my maiden name would be insanely weird as a middle name (it's very foreign to put it lightly) and most everyone in my family tree has the middle name of "Ann", "Marie" or "Catherine" or some variant of Catherine. And while they are all pretty, they are NMS even though Ann is my middle name. lol

  • Evangeline!!! So pretty. I'd use it if my dh didn't hate it
  • I love Evangeline.

Close second is Lorraine or Alana.

My daughter is Evangeline, so I'm obviously biased, but that's my favorite. We call her Evie, and used to play The Princess and the Frong song to my belly when I was pregnant with her! :)

We will probably mix in Eva as a nickname later because it sounds like more of an adult nickname than Evie. Maybe people are lying, but everyone tells me how beautiful her name is all the time. We picked it because it's different t without being weird or made-up.

I love your taste all around, actually!

  • Not completely my style but definitely respectable, pretty names. Tabitha and Lorraine are very pretty though I'd go with Lorraine if I had to choose. And Evangeline is pretty but also sounds deeply southern country girl to me (which you may be, so I can support that).

I had a good friend in college named Martha Blaine (Blaine was her middle name), so I'm partial to Martha as well.

I like old fashioned names (but not old lady names) if that makes sense? I love the name Monica! But my partner doesn't, I also love the name Aubrey, I think that is so pretty, my nana was Audrey but putting the b in makes it sound more modern
  • Evangeline is my favorite !!!
  • I love Evangeline, but Eleanora is really pretty too. Especially with a nn of Ellie or Nora.  The others are NMS, but not awful.

I actually LOVE Edith.  It's not common. I think it's really pretty.  Old fashioned names are making a comeback recently.  I think choosing a really popular one defeats the purpose of having an old timey name. Like, Eleanor(a) nn Ellie.. so common right now.  Maybe it's Ellie that's common.  But too many for my taste.

    ETA-posted too soon.

  • Here I go again, I am the minority, but I HATE Tabitha, reminds me A) of a mean girl, and B) of a cat name,  Tabby?. I do really like Eleanora and Evangeline.
