Fever, what should I do?

Ok ladies, we've never had to deal with a higher fever here so I'm unsure of what to do. Here's today in a nutshell: B woke up with a fever. Wouldn't eat anything. Threw up his milk and water. Took him to the walk in. 102 fever. Gave him a Tylenol suppository. He fell asleep on the way home. Took a 3.5 hour nap. Woke up hungry obviously so he had crackers, watermelon, water and pedialite. Gave him some ibuprofen about 5:30ish. Ran around like crazy. Total acting like himself. Pushed fluids then had some plain noodles and more water/pedialite. Just put him to bed and he felt warm again. He asked for medicine which he knows is for his teeth and asked to go to bed which he never does. My gut isn't right about it. I can't give him ibuprofen, it's every 8 hours. Can I give Tylenol? I'm awful at this stuff. HELP! TIA.

Re: Fever, what should I do?

  • I do a 4 hour rotation of ibuprofen/tylenol until the fever breaks, but not more than a 24 hour period.

  • Yup, Tylenol can be given after 4 hrs, then more ibprofin after another 4.

  • O. Thanks ladies. DH is off to Walgreens. I just checked in on him and he's sound asleep and doesn't feel warm. I feel awful not knowing what to do but we've luckily never had to deal with it. Thank you!

  • I wouldn't wake him at this point. If he wakes again I would give him something. Tylenol and Motrin are absorbed differently (one through the liver, one through the kidneys I think) so they are safe every 3 or 4 hours alternating. He might just need to rest at this point.

This.  If his fever gets high, he'll wake on his own, he won't sleep through it.  I think above 102 is high enough to wake a toddler.  (And yup, tylenol is metabolized through the liver, and ibuprofin is through the stomach) though ibuprofin does tend to work better on fevers, so I only do the alternating tylenol/ibuprofin if the fever comes back before I can give more ibuprofin.

This is what I was going to say. A gets ear infections and has had a lot of fevers with them. She always wakes up when the fever goes up again.

  • Thanks ladies! I alternated between Tylenol, Ibuprofen. His fever got pretty high this morning and we're pushing more fluids. We'll just wait it out and see. We've always followed the BRAT diet.

Have you tried giving him a bath? A tepid bath is what usually breaks L's fevers.

DH is going to try that while I'm at work. I'm only working 3 hours today.
