Baby hates tummy time!

My son is almost 15 weeks old and has hated tummy time from the beginning. I have been trying to do it with him since birth and have still been unable to have any success. I have tried every tip and technique that I can find on the internet and nothing works. All he does is burrow his face into the floor, pillow, exercise ball, my chest...whatever I have him laying on. He just screams and face plants. I have tried putting toys in front of him, using a mirror, laying on the floor with him...nothing works. He doesn't even begin to try and lift his head. He does have head control though. He sits and stands with support and has no problem keeping his head up. It's like he has no desire to ever use his arms to push up from his stomach though. Any suggestions? Should I be worried?

  • My DD isn't really a fan either. I have been putting her in an exosaucer with rolled up blankets around her to work on head and neck control and she loves it.

DS isn't a fan either. What works for us is propping him up on the boppy and I lay in front of him to he has to lift his head to see me. We wait until he's in his smiley, happy mood and we can usually get about 7 minutes of tummy time.

  • The goal of tummy time is neck control mainly IMO. Things will come with time not every baby is exactly on the same time schedule, what's normal for one isn't for the next. Don't stress too much try other things for neck control (sounds like you're doing good on that!) remember your a good mama and your baby is well taken care of!
  • I would not stress over it but since you are looking for suggestions...Dd has always liked being held upright with her head on my shoulder. She has gained a lot if head and neck strength by pushing herself up and holding her head up while I am holding her. She also likes tummy time on her changing pad.

I agree to try when they are in a good mood - DD did best with this in the morning vs. the afternoon. She could care less about toys at this point so that does not help with her either.

  • I offer no suggestions, just support.  DD is the same exact way.  She just wails with her face buried in the floor/boppy.  She very occasionally raises her head to let out a pterodactyl scream, but that's about it.  Like you said, she can sit supported and has great head control, but I too worry about the tummy time issue.  Especially since tummy time was my other kids' favorite time.

  • Mine hates it too! Hates it with the fire of 1000 suns! She is starting to get a flat spot though so I unfortunantly make her do it anyway. Feels like I am torturing the poor little thing! She is getting stronger everyday though so once she had a little more control I am sure she will like it better. I also just got a bumbo for her to sit in as another excercise. I am sure it will get easier. Just keep at it!

DS really hated it too until I realized that doing it twice a day wasn't enough for him to build up his muscles.  I also realized he wasn't enjoying it on the playmat.  I started doing 2 minutes or so of tummy time in his crib after every single diaper change (except the night ones).  I also started carrying him in the superman hold instead of on the shoulder every time.  Within 3 days, he went from lying flat face down doing the newborn scrunch to holding his head up and rolling over.
  • Also not a fan.  I started rolling him over onto his back once he got fussy (about 5 seconds into it) then rolling him back again, then rolling him the other side once the fussing starts again.  As time has gone on, I've gotten longer stretches and he actually lifted his head enough yesterday to see himself in the mirror and give himself a cheeky grin.
  • DD sits in the Bumbo and we hold her up. She has great neck control. But hates tummy & back time, and is not rolling over yet.
  • My LO absolutely hated it last week and now he tolerates it for a minute or two. He used to try and eat the floor but now he will prop himself up on his arms. I just kept at it even if he was fussing a bit. I also carry him around the house tummy down on my forearms and lay him lay across my legs tummy down since those are versions of tummy time.
  • My pedi semi-flamed me for next to no Tummy Time. Said it was important not just for head /neck, but upper body strength. My LO has pretty good head/neck control at almost 12 weeks but hates being on her stomach and is not rolling over yet. So we're trying!!
