Any Rh sensitized moms here? UPDATE

I'm O neg and had a miscarriage last January, with that I had 2 shots of Rhogam about 5 days apart- apparently not enough! Just found out that I have a very small amount of antibodies built up, so now it's looking like I'll be a pincushion for the next 6 months. Anyone else dealing with Rh sensitivity?

UPDATE: I had more in depth blood test and found that we are having a girl who is also Rh Negative! SO relieved not to have to deal with Rh factor this pregnancy. :)

Re: Any Rh sensitized moms here? UPDATE

  • I got the shot twice with my last pregnancy, 1 at 28 weeks and one at birth. And it will be the same with this one. I also had one at 8ish weeks with this one due to spotting.

  • O- here.

I got the Rhogam shot at about 28/30 weeks.  They tested DD's blood when she was born and she has B-, so they said I didn't need the shot after birth.  When I went for my first appt with this OB, they drew blood at the first appt to check for the antibodies.

I don't remember what all they said with the test results, something about they could tell my body wasn't attacking the baby, so I could wait with the shot until probably week 28ish again.

@Wolfette139-- my OB with DD's delivery said negative blood types with no history of m/c got the shot at 28/30ish weeks and then again after birth if the baby had a positive blood type.  That was also 2/2.5 years ago, so it might not be the most current information.

Also, since you're O-, too, OP, can I just say blood banks are obnoxious.  They find out you're O- and they NEVER stop calling since you're the universal donor.  But no one but O- can donate to you...  So basically, we can save hundreds of lives, but we're pretty SOL if someone has used up O- blood before we need it.  UGGGGGGH.

  • I'm A- but I am not sensitized. I had some spotting around 9 weeks, so I've had the Rhogam shot but I'm pretty sure my body hasn't started making any antibodies (I think that was the point of the pre-shot blood work). Like PPs said, I'll just have it again at 28 weeks and after birth.

I'm sorry that you're dealing with this. My former OB made it sound really scary when they found out I was A-, but it seems like they're really good at handling it these days. Good luck with everything!

  • I'm o neg as well... Just curious, when did your doctor mention/awknowledge your rh negativity, because my hasnt yet. So I'm not that well informed about the subject. Luckily I have an appointment on Wednesday and can talk to him about it then!
  • I am also O negative. I have had the pleasure of Rhogam once after my miscarraige in September and twice already in the first 13 weeks of this pregnancy due to slight bleeding.

Curbs12...the doctor may not acknowledge it right at first unless you have had bleeding or complications. Probably more towards birth as my doc explained the shot is only good for a certain amount of bleeding and has to be given when your blood is suspected of mixing with baby's.
  • With my first pregnancy I had a bleeding scare and got it around 10 weeks or so. Had again I believe 16 weeks later (something like that is how good the shot is for) and then again at like 26 weeks and then after birth. I just received it a week ago around 10-11 weeks for bleeding, so will need it again before and after birth.
  • Wow! Thanks for the replies, :)

I found out with my first pregnancy in January that I was o neg. After my 2nd round of blood work with this pregnancy (done during NT scan) is when I was told that I had some antibodies in my system.

The plan so far is to keep checking my blood to see if the antibodies increase. They also took some blood last week to check the blood type of the baby, the good news is I'll find out the sex early! I don't know what DH's blood type is, no one has offered to check yet.

I'll be 15 weeks tomorrow! (Signature won't work)
  • @Lanatir‌ a B- blood type is rather rare. Are you or your husband from any particular ethnic group?

@NatureLovers--  Yes and no.  But I'm O- and DH is B+, so we can only have an O or B blooded child.  B+ is like 9% of the population, O- is about 8% of the population, and B- is like 2% when it comes to amassing the "Caucasian" ethnicities.  I can't speak for DH's side (as I know he has a good amount of Polish from somewhere, but then also French and Irish, unsure of percentages), but I know my blood line is somewhere close to 75% Czech (mom is full blooded and dad has Czech in his side) and the rest is German or Austrian, which (sorry if this offends anyone), but all of those are super similar with the regions my family hails from (SE Germany, Western Czech Republic, and Northern Austria.  What's a few man drawn borders? haha).
