Anyone's kid terrified of the vacuum?

Out of nowhere, and seemingly not prompted by any traumatic event, Sophia had suddenly developed a terror of the blender, vacuum, coffee grinder, or anything that plugs in and makes a similar noise. I'm talking run-in-her-bedroom, shut-the-door, close-and-cover-her-eye, "no no no no no" type of terrified. Don't know where this behavior came from or how to deal with it other than not use any of these things when she is home (yes, my floors are really dirty right now since we are rarely home without her here). Only thing I was thinking of is getting her toy versions of these appliances/tools that make play noises so she sees that they are not going to hurt her when mommy and daddy are using theirs.

Any other ideas? I pray this phase ends soon.

  • Yes. I've been trying to de-sensitize her by having her be in earshot but in a different room and having DH play with her and keep her distracted while the noise is going on. Just in the last week, she's willing to let me vacuum as long as she is in her crib with her stuffed animals (I guess that's a secure/safe place for her). She still makes me close the bathroom door when I use the hair dryer on high, but she'll let me use it on low with the door open! LOL.

  • My dd always has been afraid of all those things. I wear her in my mei tai on my back and she is less terrified.
  • Yes, DS is afraid of the vacuum. He tells me it is "too loud". My floors are dirtier than I would like too. When I do vacuum, he tolerates sitting with DH.
  • Lol mine always want to vacuum! When they are afraid of things I let them do it and then they aren't afraid any more

Oh man, DD loves it when I vacuum. She has a little Minnie Mouse vacuum cleaner that she pushes along side with me when I use it. Sometimes she likes to ram hers into mine and then laugh. We got a little Dirt Devil hand vacuum for quick pick up in between vacuuming the whole floors and she loves to use that. Maybe if you got a little one for them to use they might not think of it being so scary? It's a win win in my house. She's not scared and she likes to clean up with that thing

  • DD has always been afraid of the noise when it's first turned on then seems to deal with it. I always make sure she knows I'm about to turn it on and then countdown before turning it on. This allows her to prepare for the noise. Sometimes she hides behind the couch, sometimes she runs to her room, and other times she stands there waiting. Usually within 20-30 seconds she's back to playing, but she always keeps a safe distance from the noise until it's over.
