Outgrowing Zantac? (not dosage)

LO has been on Zantac since she was 4/5 weeks old and it's worked well for us. we just upped her dosage again in June but for the past week, she's been having what seems like a flare up and all of her symptoms are back. she would be completely asleep in our arms and as soon as we would put her in her crib, she'd wake up screaming. at first I thought it was 4MW but then DH put her in her RnP last night and she sighed and went right to sleep. (cue ugly crying because of the sigh)

we took her wedge out of her crib last month because she was doing so much better and moving around so she'd wake up not even inclined, so this is out of left field. I emailed her pedi last night and she said it does sound like a flare up but she's more concerned with the fact that M is getting fussy with her bottles again. she said to watch it for the rest of the weekend and if the inclined sleeping doesn't help with her fussiness to the bottle, to bring her and a poop diaper in this week. I did put her back in her crib with the wedge at one point last night but whenever she scootches down too far and isn't inclined, she wakes up screaming.

has anyone else's LO's been fine on Zantac and then suddenly had it stop working when it had nothing to do with the dosage?? nothing else has changed - we haven't started solids yet or changed anything else in her routine. thanks for reading what turned into a novel. :x

Zantac never worked for LO. It just wasn't strong enough. We eventually moved on to Prilosec. That's worked well. Maybe it's time for you to talk to your doctor about a stronger antacid.
I'm sorry you're dealing with this. I hope you can find some relief soon.

  • We haven't had that experience yet, but I will be on the lookout now that you mentioned it happened with your LO. We seem to be behind everyone here on the board as she was born later in Feb.
    And then there were three...

  • @mamajop‌ we're on the strongest dose for her weight, too. it's so frustrating when they're in pain and you can't do anything about it!

@BB0214‌ is the Prevacid that your LO takes a liquid? I've heard that a lot of babies have to take a dissolvable pill form which freaks me out.

@giganten‌ yeah we're near the end of Feb too so we're usually late to things like this but I haven't seen anything like it posted, unless it was in a random thread that I missed. I've heard of this happening but was hoping we would miss it!

@Rach521‌ the Prevacid is a liquid.
  • Yes! My LO was on it for about 2 months and it just stopped working. Dr said it's very common. She now take omeprazole 2x daily and it has made a huge difference. The only problem is it causes constipation so LO gets 2-3oz prune juice a day.
  • My little one is having the same issues. Her pedi put her on Prevacid (15 mg )- we just sprinkle it on her cereal in the morning. The rx kind is really expensive, so her pedi recommended this route first. We're trying it this weekend-- pedi said it will take a few days to notice if it is working.
  • thank you, everyone!!! :x
