Flat Head Syndrome?

My son loves to sleep with his head turned to the right. As a result, I noticed he is developing a flat spot on the back right of his head. It is making the back of his head look slightly uneven. It is not significant by any means, but it still worries me. Is it too late to try to change his sleeping position and see if it heals on it's own? I keep putting a rolled up blanket on the right side of his head to prevent him from turning his head during naps.

  • If its on one side you may want to rule out torticollis. My LO has a flat spot on the left side and we tried turning her bassinet and keeping her off her head as much as possible and it just wasn't getting any better. We took her in last wk and it turns out her neck muscles are super tight causing her to only turn to the left and not the right. We are now in physical therapy once a week and hoping to prevent having to get the helmet. It's worth looking into IMO bc if u catch it early enough chances of having to do the helmet go down. If its not torticollis then yes it should resolve when LO starts sitting more than laying

  • +1 for checking into the torticollis. My DD has it, and fights turning her head to the left. The pedi described it as what you feel when you have a stiff neck from sleeping. It has caused a flat spot on the right side of her head. I think it developed because she sat so low throughout my pregnancy and was a bit crooked moving down during labor as well.

For us, we have a physical therapist who comes to the house for her. Here in PA there is a program called "The Alliance", which is government funded. If you qualify (and torticollis automatically does), then you get free physcial therapy performed at your house until the problem is resolved. It's pretty awesome. No income/insurance required to qualify.
I wish we had that! How awesome! It would be nice to have them come to us and even nicer to have it be free

  • @Laroo0220‌ and @sandbridge1030‌ - did your little one have full mobility of the neck and could turn it both directions? My son looks both ways and will lay with his head to the left if I'm on that side of him, but he just favors the right. At night he automatically sleeps with his head turned to the right.
I'm going to the pediatrician for a check-up and I will definitely bring it to their attention.
Thank you in advance for your help and feedback!
  • My LO has the same thing. I asked the doctor but she wasn't concerned.
  • My LO will turn her head to the right but not often or voluntarily. I have to put her on my shoulder and turn her head that way. She will also turn it to watch tv so we've been using that for a few min a day to stretch her

  • @hcam0707‌ she can turn her head in both directions, but always favors the right. I've noticed she's starting to get better with it as we do some stretching (ie at night she'll switch and sleep on the left for a while). When we stretch to the left she sometimes fights it, or she won't really keep it there very long before turning back. We use the tv trick too.... :-/

  • My first DD was going a little flat by 2 months. She'd sleep frog legged, hands over head all the time. Our pedi recommended rolling up a blanket to put along her back to keep her on her side at night. We did that from the start with the following 2 kids. After working at a daycare and seeing many 3 and 4 year olds sporting flat, weird looking noggins I refused for mine to be one of them!

  • My doctor wanted us to get her a pillow when she was sleeping on the right side. I got the pillow that is meant to help them sleep properly and the flat spot is gone.

What kind of pillow? I'm surprised that would be recommended due to SIDS
