Allow me to reintroduce myself

Hello, I posted a bit when I was pregnant with DD1. We had some struggles after I returned to work when she was 4 months old because we could never get her to drink from a bottle. My FI would bring her to me on my lunch break, 5 days a week, so that she could nurse. That lasted until she was 8 months old, and I had to leave on a 3-week work trip. I didn't have any pumped milk saved, so at that point we switched her to formula.
Now I am pregnant with DD2, and I'm hoping to get some questions answered about things I can change this time. With DD1, I noticed my milk would start to taste soapy, which I now know can be a lipase issue. Does this automatically mean I'll have a lipase issue this time around? I want to be prepared to scald my pumped milk if need be. Also, when is the best time to introduce a bottle? We waited until DD1 was around 3 months, maybe a little earlier, and I think that greatly influenced her preference for breast over bottle. TIA for your input!

Re: Allow me to reintroduce myself

  • We introduced bottles around 4 weeks my LO and he took them like a champ. Until about the time he was 12 weeks old. Then he flat out refused anything but the boob for almost a month.

It took a lot of patience and practice but LO was back on bottles in a few weeks and I went back to work. There was no option for someone to bring him to me.

Sometimes if doesn't matter when you intro a bottle - it can be difficult no matter what :(

Try to be relaxed and consistent with giving a bottle. We noticed that if we went a few days without "practice" he would have a much more difficult time.

  • I introduced a bottle at 2 weeks (gulp) even though my pedi suggested 4. I EBF and my little has a preference for me but still takes a bottle every day and he is 3 1/2 mo. He has to be hungry and it has to be warm enough but we have been successful in him taking both breast or bottle. My DH gives the bottle when I'm not home and I've never given the bottle myself. I don't know about lipase repeating itself but I too have high lipase. I read where someone tested their milk every couple hours over a few days to see WHEN the lipase kicked in, and then they would know when to scald. If the milk is going to be frozen I would pump, freeze and then defrost to taste before creating a stash. I froze over 200oz before I realized I had high lipase.
