Babies: 9 - 12 Months

At what age to start using utensils by themselves?

DD is 10 1/2mo and I'm wondering when they start learning how to feed themselves using baby utensils, if I give her spoon she just bangs it or throws it overboard, so obviously she's not ready, but at what age will she understand that a fork or a spoon can be used to help her eat?

  • Joseph is expressing interest in spoons right now. He understands the food should go in his mouth, but frankly, it's the concept of gravity that he's not grasping yet. We're testing, but not quite there yet. He prefers fingers. He understands thoughs.

  • DD just turned 1 year and she is attempting forks.  Most of the time she doesn't get it quite right, but she understands that you poke the food and then put that food in your mouth.

  • Ben is 10 months and has been trying to feed himself...which involves grabbing the spoon and shoving it into his cheek.  Obviously, we have a ways to go.  I bought him the Gerber spoons with the shorter handles for his stocking.  I think this will help make things a little easier for him when the time comes when he really gets it.
