Which spelling do you guys like better?
Maya
Mayah
Mya
Myah
Mia
Miah

Re: So we decided on a name but...

  • A lot of these are different names, not just different spellings? I like Mia for example, but that's a veery different name than Maya, which is also pretty but makes me think, "Maya the bee..."

Personally I was leaning towards Mya because I like that it's not as common spelling but still undecided
  • I say Mya.
  • I love the name and spelling Maya. But I'm biased since it's my dogs name and I did pick it because of "Maya the bee" :)
  • Mya or Maya.

Why just plan a wedding when you can plan a baby AND a wedding?
  • Mya...... If u spell it Mia ppl will read me-a
  • I like Maya and Mia but Mia I think mee-ya, not my-ya. If that makes sense. Not sure which one you're going for.

Having a common spelling of a name is not that bad. Less issues for spelling errors on important documents. Less likely for people generally misspelling the name.

    Test
  • My daughters name is Maya....people always try to spell it Mia or Mya. Never understood that because I thought Maya was the traditional spelling.

  • I had a lady at work chew me out for not knowing she spelled it "Miah" so maybe... Something more common will make her less angry at a stranger in 40 years
  • Agree on the difference between Mia and Maya - those are two different names.

I think Maya is the way to go because it's the most common spelling in American, ranking #72 in popularity for 2014.  If you're really set on Mya, that's not so bad since it's ranking is #117.  Remember, that when little Mya and Maya are out on the playground and someone is calling one of those names, the names are the same.  Make it easier on your kid (and help them get a job someday when that name is on a resume) by making it a standard spelling.

Why do people do this? I have a fairly unique name and I could never get pissed that someone spelled it wrong or called me "Chloe" or whatever.

I'd go with Maya.  Mya makes me feel like someone was writing the name too fast and forget the "a." But again, if you love it - go with it. ("Miah" also kinda sounds like mee-ya to me.)  Maya is a good, not-too-popular name as it is. No need to extra-special it in my opinion.

This is something parents never seem to realize. I''m amazed by how many people think they are making their kiddo "special" by giving them a weird spelling of a generally popular name. But we hear our names more often than anything. Doesn't matter how many x's or z's you put in it, your kid is still one of 100 "
Jacksons" in the class (for example).

  • I would go with Mya! :)
  • Many of those are different names. If you want the My-a pronunciation, you need to use Maya. Most of the others are prounounced Mee-a or the spelling sounds very made up IMO.

  • Maya. Hands down.
  • If you're going for "Mai-ah" then go with Maya. That's how I would spell it if someone told me their name. Don't spell it differently or she will spend her whole life correcting people. If you're going for "me-ah" then go with Mia. Different name. Love Mia!

This. My name is a special spelling f a common name and it is a minor but frequent irritant. Maya is a lovely name and your daughter will be totally unique as she is. She doesn't need special spelling to make her special.

This. My boyfriends name is Arron instead of Aaron. Every single important paper he's ever had he has had to send back because they spell it wrong. Every time a new insurance card comes he has to send it back. Even though he is very good about spelling it out to people!
It doesn't really bother him and he's never been upset over it but its just a hassle ya know?

  • Mya.

    Mia looks like mee-a
    Maya looks like May-a.
  • I see two different names. Maya and Mia and then spelling variations of those.
  • Mya or Maya

Thnx for ur opinions ladies xoxo
  • Maya.

Mia is pretty too, but as others have mentioned a completely different name.

  • I would go with Maya out of that list. If you really want a different spelling, maybe Maia would be a good compromise? That's my doctor's name! No confusion - just a slightly more unique (but not strange) spelling.

Speaking as a teacher, I wouldn't recommend giving your child any of the stranger spellings on your list. Not only is it hard to figure out how to pronounce it, but since she likely won't be the only Maya her peers meet, they will probably spell her name wrong OFTEN and really upset her.

My students just cannot spell each other's names properly if they're weird variations on a common name. They know the name Jasmine, they can't wrap their heads around Jazzmyn, you know? There have been a lot of hard feelings the last few years over kids not getting names right on group work, invitations, etc.

Agreed. My husband has a similar issue as Markus instead of Marcus. It's a minor difference but we once had to switch banks because they
could not get the damn spelling right. It's so much easier just to have a good, strong, interesting name that is spelled the standard way.
