Tips for packing up baby clothes

Anyone else starting to pack up outgrown clothes from their LO? I like being organized and really need to start doing this since DS has officially grown out of 3 months clothes. I want to save them in case I have another boy someday.

Do you have any tips besides putting them in plastic bins? I know I have seen people put them in vacuum sealed bags. Others just in ziplocks with laundry sheets? What works the best for you?

Re: Tips for packing up baby clothes

  • I just put them in plastic storage containers by size, but we have a TON of storage space-1200 sq ft walk up attic and even bigger semi finished basement.

  • Storage bins and then they go out in the shed.
  • I separated out unisex stuff from "girl" stuff. Used Space Bags and stacked them in a Tupperwear bin. Oh and I used clear packing tape with Sharpie to mark down the contents: newborn/neutral/spring, newborn/girl/spring, newborn/girl/summer, etc. My thinking is that if we have a boy next, I won't have to dig through to find all of the non-girly things.

  • With my older kids, they went in bins labeled by size. As emma outgrows things, i toss it in a bag and when the bag is full we drop it off at salv army.

This is LO#2 for me. I tried to be super organized putting it away after #1. What a waste! Just go by sex & size. If you do wind up needing them again, you'll wash before you use them. Not worth folding & having perfect little piles.

  • We've been giving away basic clothes (like plain/generic onesies or pants), and keeping the stuff that is either practically new, or has sentimental value, like something he was wearing in a favorite photo, or something that was a gift from a loved one.

The keepers go into space bags organized by size, and the space bags go into a large plastic bin that contains other "infant" stuff, like the infant insert to the Ergo, bathtub, and carseat, and the changer/napper attachment to the PNP that he's too big for now.  If we have another, all of the "infant" stuff will be together.  The rubbermaid bin is heavy-duty enough that it can be stored in an attic or garage without worrying about damage from moisture.

  • I took the AcaAwkward approach with DS's stuff. I washed everything before using for DD anyway so I didn't need it neatly folded and organized (that's my excuse anyway). I do agree with the poster who said spot any stains and wash before packing away because they will yellow, but I certainly did not always do that.

With this DD, as she outgrows her clothes I pack them in diaper boxes and they go off to goodwill. I did not use diaper boxes the first time around because out basement is a little damp and I thought the plastic bins would be better. But now I have a bunch of empty bins in the basement from all the stuff I ended up getting rid of.

  • I keep the storage bin for the current size in the nursery (3 month right now). When I try something on her that no longer fits, it can immediately go in the bin. That makes it easy for me to weed out her clothes until it's time to transition all of that size out of the closer.
  • I bought a bunch of the apace bags when we moved. I dont recommend using them unless you are putting then inside another container. We left stuff in my sisters garage and mice chewed through some of them andsome of them also ripped on whatever.

You can vacuum seal with just plain ziplock gallon freezer bags and suck through a drinking straw inserted in the corner before fully sealing. I do this packing for trips all the time. I have done this with Jack's newborn clothes he grew out of, then wrote the size and contents on them with a sharpie. Then the accumulated sizes can be stacked neatly inside a larger storage bin.

I put my nice maternity clothes for my next pregnancy in one of these (as I do with sweaters and off season clothes) and stored it on the top shelf in my closet:

  • For some reason the link won't show up, but it's for a Crate & Barrel storage bag from their Clean Slate collection.
