2nd Trimester

kidney infection

Has anyone had one of these? Holy crap this is the most miserable I've been in a long time... I went to Urgent Care today and they gave me some antibiotics, told me to keep taking tylenol to keep the fever down, drink water, etc. I know I'm not going to feel better after a few hours of taking one pill but is there a point where I should go to the ER or can they really do nothing that has already been done for me? I called my OB's office and they close at 2:30 on Fridays... .grrr....

Re: kidney infection

  • I had one, and it was the worst pain I have ever experienced (I haven't gone through labor yet, so...). I went to my PA when I had mine, and he just gave me the antibiotic and some other medication (painkiller, maybe?). I imagine that a kidney infection is so much worse when you're pregnant because you can't take the good stuff for the pain. It probably took 24 hours for me to start feeling any relief. If you go 24 hours and still feel awful, it may be worth a visit to the ER.

I hope you feel better soon. Kidney infections suck balls.

  • fwiw, I'm a board certified ER doctor. If you're pregnant and have a kidney infection/pyelonephritis (as opposed to a more common and less dangerous bladder infection/UTI), more often than not you should be admitted to the hospital for IV antibiotics and monitoring. Not sent home on oral antibiotics. I'd try to get ahold of someone from your OB's office - doc on call, nurse hotline, etc. They will probably tell you to go to the ER. This isn't something to dick around with. Feel better!

ETA: I'm just frustrated on your behalf. Urgent Cares should know to defer your case to the local ER, and put in a call to your OB on your behalf so that they know of your situation.
This is very helpful information. Thanks for sharing. I wouldn't have known that oral antibiotics aren't enough during pregnancy. Would this be the case for any kind of major infection?

Thank you for your responses! And your sympaties.... I agree, a kidney infection is miserable! Definitely the worst I've felt, maybe ever?? (And I've been through labor!) This is very helpful information to know and a little frustrating the Dr at Urgent Care just sent me home with antibiotics!

This morning I feel like an entirely new person. The pain has almost completely gone away (I get twinges of it if I'm on my feet too long), my fever is gone, no achyness, no fatique, no nausea... I pretty much feel normal again. Do you think I still need to go to the ER?
