Trying to Get Pregnant

Is it really that much of a risk?

My husband and I want to start TTC very soon. I have been to the doctor just to make sure I am healthy before we start trying and all my blood work has come back great. The only thing is that I am overweight. Other than that I am completely healthy.

Even though I am overweight, do you think it is ok for us to start TTC?

  • Yes. I'm glad your blood work came back normal. Did you bring up your weight concerns with your doctor?

  • I often think it's a personal choice.  If you're ok being 20+ lbs heavier than you are now while pregnant, that's up to you.  I decided to lose my excess weight before but had I gotten pregnant before losing the weight, I would have been more mindful of my habits during pregnancy.

  • If you follow your doc's recommendations for diet and physical activity, I don't think it's a huge risk. If your doc has concerns during pregnancy they'll talk to you about it.

  • Overweight in what sense? By BMI? Are we talking 10 lbs, 20, 50, 100, 200?

This. I mean, how overweight you are and how it's being measured plays into what my answer might be. But if your doctor didn't bring up any concerns, I'd go ahead if you're comfortable.

For the record, I'm overweight, but my blood work and blood pressure are perfect. My doctor has said that if I want to lose weight for myself it's a great idea and she supports it, but since I'm otherwise healthy it's not an urgent thing. It will affect the weight I put on during pregnancy and losing it after. Also, since there's no guarantee that you get KU right away, there's no harm in starting a healthy regimen now.

My one issue that concerns weight is that if we end up at IVF there is a weight/BMI limit at my clinic, so that's something I do think about and one of the reasons that I am trying to lose right now.

  • I was (and am) about 20lbs over what my GP & orthopedic would like me to be when we TTC'd the last time. Unless you are so overweight or underweight that it affects your cycles then I see no reason not to TTC.

This. I used to weigh 189 and didn't get my period because of my weight so I dropped to 130. So it can affect fertility in that manner but if your doc isn't concerned, then don't worry about it. Just be careful to maintain as to not increase your risk for gestational diabetes or other issues.
