Swaddle debate

DD is almost 12 weeks. She is not rolling over yet. During the day I can swaddle her and put her in her swing and she'll nap for 2-3 hours. If she is not swaddled she will wake up much sooner, smacking herself in the face.

But at night she has started really fighting her swaddle in her sleep when she's in her crib. Last night she woke more often than normal and both times when I went in she was really fighting her swaddle. Early this morning she was really flopping and fussing in her crib so DH went to watch her for a while and she fought and fought (in her sleep) until she got both arms free. Then she slept peacefully for another couple of hours like she is in the picture below.

I go back to work Monday so I really don't want to screw with her sleep right now but I am thinking I need to just ditch the swaddled. WWYD and if you would ditch it would you go cold turkey? She really seems to want both arms free.

Re: Swaddle debate

  • Because I have tried not swaddling her at nap time and it seems to wake her up sooner.

  • Ok I am obviously over thinking. She just has been sleeping so well til now I don't want to screw it up just as I am going to work and have to be up for the day at 5. I'll give it a shot tonight and see how it goes.

  • You can also just undo the swaddle at night once she falls asleep.

  • I hear ya! DS sleeps SO well when swaddled (he's also 12 weeks) but we're trying to start faxing it out. Last night we swaddled him with one arm out and he slept just as he has been!! I think we'll keep trying that.

    Good luck!

  • @MamaFantastic‌ - basically feel the same way. I am winging it for sure. I may just unswaddle once she falls asleep tonight and see how it goes.

  • So swaddle for naps but not night.
    This is what we're doing.

  • Uh ya, same boat here too, I feel like I have tried almost everything! Last night we did1 arm out, it was ok for about an hour & a half. Then I did both arms out, that was ok for an hour, then it was back to 1 arm out. He really wants to sleep on his sidebut he hasn't figured out how to balance like that so he keeps flipping back & forth & swatting himself with his hands. We've tried all the gimmicky swaddle weaners out there with marginal results. Totally winging it here & totally inconsistent, just praying we stumble on the miracle solution soon!
  • I do whatever he feels like at that moment. Sometimes he wants an airtight swaddle, sometimes a loose one, sometimes one arm out, sometimes both arms out...... I just follow his cues. If she's showing you she wants out at night, I say go for it.

  • Ok I am giving arms out a shot tonight. I figure if it's a bust I just swaddle her in the middle of the night.

  • What @eme520‌ said, we stopped cold turkey when he was not even 6 weeks old. Mostly because of the heat, he sleeps just fine and we didn't have problems.

  • Ours did this at 1 month! I started doing a half-swaddle under his arms with a blanket and I just put him in a long-sleeved onsie. He actually started sleeping BETTER at night once he was comfy. He might flail around for a minute but then he falls right back asleep. He likes to be able to rub his eyes or suck on his hand for a minute to fall back asleep. Just go with it! Sounds like your LO is giving you some clear clues :)

What did you dress LO in last night? I have a debate with my hubs about how we should dress our LO without the swaddle. I'm curious to know what worked for you. TIA!
  • @macynsnoop‌ - just saw your question - for some reason tagging my SN does not work. Anyway, I put her in footie pj's and a sleep sack. I wanted her to have long sleeves since her arms are out.
