Nervous... bathtime blunder

I was bathing DD and accidentally got water directly in her face. She started coughing hard like she had inhaled some. I sat her up and patted her back and she calmed down quickly. She was her normal wiggly self after and now she's zoning out on the boob (it's bedtime) but of course I'm freaking out about secondary drowning and whatnot. Is this just FTM paranoia or should I actually worry? And if I should be concerned, what do I do about it? Just check on her all night? Call the pedi night-line?

  • I'd say your being overly worried. DD goes in the showed with DH or I every night. Thats her bath time. And she get water sprayed on her face almost every time. She "spits" a little and then is totally fine.

  • Same thing happened to DS and I called the nurse help line for my pedi. She actually laughed at me. As PP stated, there has to be a struggle where a large amount of water is ingested. I'm a ftm too and it scared me, but I'm sure lo is fine.

  • I thought secondary downing was another name for chemical drowning which only happens in pools/spas that have chlorine and other chemicals in it.

  • Just like everyone else said, I think you're a-okay. We did this to Merriwether while we all took a bath together and she turned all red and purple and choked and it was awful. That was like, 6 weeks ago and she's still a rockstar.

    Way to be cautious though!

  • I was reading up on this after your post last night. I had never heard of secondary driwning before. However, from what I read there has to be a struggle with water ingested for secondary driwning to occur. Even there it is rare and only accounts for 1-2 percent of drowning occurences according to Web MD. While it is great to be cautious I would not worry about little splashes to face. My little guy gets splashed in the face often from baths, showers or sitting in his kiddie pool with me while his 3 and 5 year old cousins play and splash around him
  • Sounds like she was just surprised to feel water on her face.  I'm sure she's fine :-)
