One for the plus sized mamas

For anybody who started out too heavy to begin with on any pregnancy, have any of you lost weight instead of gain? I'm down about 20lbs. I have a pretty good idea why at 16 weeks I am still losing semi-steadily. Aside from first tri MS and aversions to damn near everything. Pre-pregnancy I liked to enjoy a good dark stout or IPA (ok sometimes one of each) after work maybe 3-4 nights a week. Obviously I am not doing that now and my eating habits are a lot better. As somebody who is considered obese is it more safe to still be losing instead of gaining at this point? Any insight is welcome.

Re: One for the plus sized mamas

  • Considered overweight here and down 7 pounds still. Not losing anymore, but not gaining yet either. I've heard its not super uncommon.

  • I was down 6 at 15weeks...by 19weeks I'm up 3 from there. So down 3 overall since beginning. I'm ok with it. Doc is ok with it. We shall see what happens from here
  • I'm down 4 or 5 pounds.  Last pregnancy I lost over 10 pounds initially, and by the end gained it back plus ten more.  The good news is that after delivery I was below my starting weight and was able to maintain that- though I am still plus sized.

I think it's normal to lose weight at the beginning, but if it continues past the halfway point of the pregnancy I'd be slightly concerned.

  • I initially lost about 8 lbs, and have yet to gain a single one back. The Dr. says since the baby and my uterus are exactly where they should be growth wise everything is ok.

  • I was so sick in the beginning I was losing weight fast and they were worried....but now I hav we finally at 18 weeks gained 3 pounds so they are quite satisfied....my doc told me as long as baby is gaining than there is nothing to worry about! The baby will take what they need from you....try keeping up on the prenatal vitamins though...you are losing valuable nutrients as the baby needs them! Good luck...and congrats to all!!!

A bigger mama here, whose doc said if I lost 50 lbs during my pregnancy, she'd be okay with that. Obviously, that's not the case for everyone, but so long as you are eating good food for the baby, and your doc says baby looks good, then go with it. Didn't think I would be losing weight while pregnant, but I am and as long as baby is happy, then I'm happy. Still a bit sad about not "looking" preggers @19 weeks, but bonus(!) not having to buy many maternity clothes yet :) Hope this helps
  • I'm about 5'5 and a size 16/18. Not a whole lot has been mentioned by my midwife about my weight aside from "we just don't want to be gaining much" at about 9 weeks. Although we had tried for a couple years in the past when I wasn't quite as heavy we kinda thought it just wasn't in the cards for us, getting pregnant at my heaviest ever was kind of a (pleasant) surprise! As a FTM I am worried about every little thing, the pleasant side to having been losing is I'm looking more pregnant than I think I would have otherwise
  • I have a friend who lost quite a bit of weight during her pregnancy because of her diet. Her baby is a happy healthy 1 year old now. I think it's fine to lose weight if you're making better choices (diet/exercise) and not being stupid about it.
My baby really likes greasy unhealthy foods, so I've already gained about 10lbs.
  • I don't remember specifics but with my second I weighted less the day I delivered at 40 weeks and 5 days that I did the day I got my BFP.   My doctors never seemed worried about my weight.  I did have MS until 22 weeks and my baby hated me, I couldn't eat chocolate or sweets the entire pregnancy!  So far this time, I'm down maybe 8 lbs.
  • So I never had ms all of my first trimester. I am 19w1d and I'm still not gaining any weight. If I hadn't had an ultrasound I would wonder if the baby is doing okay. Prior to pregnancy I was a size 24. Still am, since the baby is growing I am still in the same clothes. No one notices I'm pregnant unless I tell them, which makes me sad, I carry my weight throughout my hips and stomach area so yeah, not surprised. Hopefully people can notice as I get further along. Although I gotta say I'm happy I've been losing weight in my first pregnancy....being overweight I've always struggled with losing weight. So then when I found out I was pregnant I changed my diet and such and that helped a lot. Especially cutting out caffeinated beverages (except once a week lol).

  • I am 16 weeks, my belly is growing but I am loosing weight. I'm not concerned at all because I am eating healthier and portion controlled food, just because my stomach is smaller. My coworker said she lost 15 pounds from start to delivery but again, she was a big girl who started making healthy lifestyle choices.
  • MW's doctor had no issues with her losing weight in the beginning of both pregnancies.  She is plus sized and enjoys losing weight in the beginning.  I am not sure of exactly how many pounds she has lost, but I think it is somewhere less than 10 pounds.

Not sure how plus sized you are, but if the doctors are not concerned about you losing 20 pounds then I would not worry about it either.

  • Started this pregnancy roughly 30lbs overweight (and that's down the 25lbs I'd lost before getting knocked up) and lost 5lbs in the first 6 weeks of the pregnancy due to MS and food aversions.  Haven't gained a thing since, and I'm at 17 weeks today.  At my appointment on Wednesday, the doctor told me that she's not worried that I haven't gained at all because that means Bean is living on my extras for now.  She didn't say if she'd prefer I avoid gaining or anything, but that not gaining at this point was still healthy and okay.

    I figure if she's not worried, I won't be either. :)

  • I'm a size 16 (was 18) an I lost 15 pounds in my fourth month, I'm now in my fifth month and haven't weighed myself yet... Kinda nervous too! The drop in weight was an ego boost when I'm feelings soo crappy.!
  • Plus size momma to be here and 19 1/2 weeks and down 11 due to still being sick all say and doc it more than pleased! She says as long as baby is growing all is well!
  • I have lost 32 due to an illness, and they didnt mind for about the first 25. Now they're getting a bit pushy about it, but I am barely able to eat anything at all. if you're eating healthy food instead of junk, I wouldn't sweat it.

Your situation just pisses me off for you! I have been eating healthy for the most part (a piece of pizza while about to eat my arm off at work today had to happen ha ha). I'm glad to know I'm not the only one thank all you ladies!!
  • Down about 12. Nausea and aversions help me to eat much less and healthier and probably the way I should have pre-pregnancy. :/

FWIW with my twins I lost 32 lbs and delivered two 6 lb babies at 4 lbs higher than my pre-pregnancy weight!

  • I'm down about 6 and continuing to steadily lose. All my doctors are ok with it as long as I'm eating enough and the baby is gaining. He's moving around all the time, so obviously something is working. :)

I lost during both pregnancies with the girls during the first/second trimesters, and during the third my weight flatlined. Baby grew at the same rate that I lost, and I wound up losing about 20 pounds total during each pregnancy. I was GD with them and had to monitor my food intake.

This one I'm type II diabetic and started the GD diet at 13 weeks, so that's probably contributing to my continued weight loss as well.
