DS gurgling and spitting out liquid

Lately, when we give DS a bottle, he'll take giant gulps then gurgle and spit out what he gulped. This usually ends up in his bib and shirt being soaked and him needing a bath. It's almost like he's forgotten how to eat. It's not like he's gone long periods without a bottle or sippy cup or anything like that. Anybody been through this? I've done some searching and can't really find out anything....

  • DD does that too. She's just playing with the drink and prefers normal cups now.

  • Is he maybe not hungry enough? Generally if kids need/want to eat, they will readily swallow it (unless there's a medical issue) and spitting it out is probably a sign he's just playing with it or doesn't really need to eat. When do you offer the bottles? Could you try dropping one or spacing it out farther? If he seems to be legitimately hungry or thirsty at the time he might take something else like juice or water or some kind of solid food. Sorry, you're dealing with this! This age is so messy!

  • My LO did and still does this from time-to-time.  I, once, made the mistake of laughing at him because it was hilarious.  He's a sucker for mommy's attention.  We've curbed the behavior by telling him "no" when he does it (and turning away to secretly snicker).  Is your DS drinking out of a sippy cup or a regular bottle?  You may want to try switching it up - giving a new sippy cup to him to see his reaction.  Or, he could just be a boy being a boy and being silly :-)

  • Thanks for the advice, ladies!

He wasn't having problems swallowing, because he would eat solids just fine. Also, he was doing it with both sippy cups and bottles.

Of course, wouldn't you know it, a couple of days adter I posted this, he stopped doing it. Must have just been playing. It was really weird...because he wouldn't outright refuse it- he'd take some, spit it out, then eagerly go back for more. Lather, rinse repeat.
