Spitting

Lately my oldest LO has been spitting. He is four and knows that it is not okay to spit in the house, on his little brother, or on other people. DH and I tell him to stop. He keeps it up even after time outs or being sent to his room. I am at a loss, any advice on trying to help him stop spitting? Advice is welcomed.

Thanks!

Re: Spitting

  • Time outs worked for us in similar situations.

  • We do make him clean up after he spits and we take movie time away and things he enjoys. He did stay at MIL's over the weekend. Not sure if he spit there or not.

  • What about a reward for not spitting?  I know it can be counter-intuitive to reward for something that is expected, but people do similar things for chores.  Something like a sticker chart, where he gets to pick out a sticker at the end of the day if he didn't spit, and if he goes a whole week he gets a special trip to the park or a new book.

Disclaimer: My kid isn't anywhere near 4, and I know he wouldn't be able to last a whole day waiting for a sticker, we'd have to break it into smaller time increments, but I don't know 4 year olds yet and if this is a valid alternative.

What if you took the fun out of spitting? I know this it totally old school and crazy but apparently my dad was something of a spitter when he was younger. After spitting on his sister my grandmother made him sit in the corner with a cup and he had to spit into the cup until it was full. Cleared him right up of the spitting habit! I wonder if you put him outside and told him he had to spit for 1-2 minutes if that would take the novelty out of spitting?

my little spits. I remove her from the room every time. It's getting better, slowly.
  • What worked for us, if DD wanted to spit, she had to go outside and spit on the grass.  If she spat inside, I'd take her outside and put her on the porch and tell her she could come back inside when she was done spitting.  (The sink was also an acceptable place to spit.)

She was younger at the time, but I've used this kind of technique for other things more recently at this age.  It worked for us, though I can totally see it not working for every kid.
