What is your alternative to WCM?

I’m looking for suggestions for alternatives to WCM. I’m not opposed to WCM, LO just won’t drink it. She loves yogurt and cheese so I know she’s getting calcium but now that she’s totally weaned, I want to make sure she’s getting enough fluids. She’ll drink water but doesn’t care for WCM. I want to avoid juice and sugary substitutes. I drink vanilla almond milk but I’m guessing it may have more sugar in it than she should have from a drink. Thoughts?

Michelin82 I just looked it up and you're right, I am surprised. What I drink (unsweetened vanilla almond milk) has 0 g sugar whereas WCM has 13 g. I may try the almond milk with her but my other worry is that she's not getting enough fat that she'd be getting from BM or WCM.

So another question for you all, is there something that is nutritionally similar in calories and fat as WCM? Or is it a moot point if she gets fat from other sources (like coconut oil on her toast and waffles)?

It took my LO about a month to get on the milk wagon. You may want up give it some more time. If you go with almond milk, I would mix in WCM. Almond milk is really low in fat and babies need fat.
  • We just had our 12 month well visit today. I told the ped I was worried that ds2 was gagging when I was offering wcm. He only will drink water or breast milk. She told me to keep offering it and eventually he will take it. Ds1 took awhile to get used to it as well- he just never gagged over it like ds2. She said to just keep on feeding cheese and yogurt in the interim as well as giving breastmilk. She also said that kids only need about 12-16 oz of wcm a day.

  • @42Butterflies I was just reading the updated blog today!  It's a good resource :)
  • @kelly422 I was thinking about that article the other day but couldn't remember where I saw it! I must have seen it when you posted it before? (or maybe someone else did). I don't have much to contribute bc Colton drinks WCM without any problems.
However, shortly after I gave birth (before Colton was drinking milk), I wanted to be hip and sought alternative milk. I was used to drinking soy milk growing up (in Asia, when I was young, soy milk was more commonly drank than cow's milk) and I hate the soy milk in the states (not as thick and rich). After reading that article I decided to just stick with cow's milk based on the protein content. I wanted to find it again the other day but couldn't locate! so thanks for posting it here!

  • Yeah it was me who posted it earlier but it was @42Butterflies who told me about her Pedi's website that has this blog :)

  • Goat's milk...DS started on it around 10 months when my milk started drying up. He's always loved it. We're able to get it from DH's coworker who has a goat which is not usually an option for people.

  • PSA @natalie115‌ be careful with goats milk. Kids who drink only goats milk are are at super high rate of being anemic and a whole slew of other health problems because of the vitamins it is missing.
  • @kelly422‌ DS takes vitamins anyway and our pedi is good with the decision. My brother was basically raised in the stuff because of his allergies when he was a baby. We tend to mix it with WCM to make it last longer too. I just like knowing that where the milk came from and knowing that how it's pasteurized and that it's not homogenized.

  • @natalie115‌ What kind of vitamins is he taking?
  • @kelly422‌ he gets the tri vit w/ iron & fluoride and a folic acid supplement. Goats milk contains more vitamins A, B-6 & C, protein, potassium, magnesium, niacin and calcium than cow's milk. I like that it is more easily digestible as DS was a spitter when he was younger. It also has more fat/calories that he needs as he's not always a great eater.
