Question for those who tore in childbirth (maybe TMI?)

I'll just start by saying that I have an appointment with my OB tomorrow, so I'm not asking you to diagnose just wondering what others experiences have been :)

I had a 3rd degree tear when I had my baby almost 6 months ago now. It hurt A LOT for the first few weeks and then healed up. At my 6 month appointment the doctor said everything looked good and cleared me to exercise, have sex etc. I went back to exercise (short runs and swimming), waited a few weeks to try sex and had to stop because it still hurt so much. I've tried a few times since then and it has been painful. Then, about a week ago my tear just started bothering me again out of the blue (not after trying to have sex). It doesn't hurt all the time but specifically right after I pee (not during like a UTI). It doesn't hurt just being in regular water, so it's something about the pee. It's not SUPER bad pain, but it's definitely there- feels like maybe 1 month after childbirth for me.

So my questions are:

#1- If you had a bad tear, have you been able to have sex again without a lot of pain?

#2- Has anyone had the pain of the tear come back for any reason?

Thanks!

  • I had a tear and my doctor gave me an estrogen cream to put over my stitches and help heal the area.

After my 1st baby sex was more painful. This time has been fine.

  • I'm sorry that you are going through this and I hope your OB gives you answers!

    I had a 4th degree tear.

I have been able to have sex without a lot of pain. Sometimes no pain at all really, sometimes a bit of pain. It would describe it as feeling similar to when I first started having sex. We use a lot of lube!

I had some pain get stronger, but that was in the early weeks as the stitches were dissolving. I haven't had much pain since about 6 weeks post-partum.

Again, I'm sorry you are in pain! That's a horrible feeling.

Sex hurt a lot at first. The spot where I tore was really sensitive and everything hurt in general. But we did find a position where he wasn't rubbing against the spot where I tore. Now it's fine.
I hope you can get back to feeling good again and that your OB has answers.
  • Hugs to you!! I had a partial 3rd degree tear and my OB cleared me for sex at my 6 week PP check and to this day it is still very painful. It felt like I was tearing again :( went back to see my ob about it and she said that I had something where my muscles "down there" were traumatized by delivery and tearing that they were wound up too tight. She referred me to pelvic floor physical therapy (I have yet to go) to help my body re learn how to relax. Also prescribed some type of gel I had to get at a pharmacy that makes it there that you're supposed to insert 20-30 mom prior to sex. Tried it once because, who plans to have sex 20-30 minutes prior to happening? And didn't notice a difference. I feel for you!! Hope you find something to help soon!
  • Haha @selahvey so obviously she doesn't know that sex for new parents is like, "QUICK! THE BABY IS ASLEEP! GO GO GO!"

Thanks everyone, this is helpful! I am in a 2 day long game of phone tag with my doctors office right now so hopefully I will get in to see someone today.

  • I also had a 4th degree tear that required surgery in the OR after LO's birth. I felt like I was sore forever- I didn't get cleared by my OB until 11 weeks. It also didn't help I was on antibiotics twice for infections. I didn't feel "normal" until my return to work at about 12 weeks. The pain now only happens very randomly and rarely now. Sex hurts a little initially each time (much like losing your virginity over and over again). I can't use lube because I get UTIs really easily. But once things get going, it ends up being fine. I definitely agree sex probably shouldn't be that painful for you at this point.

I'm surprised at all the 4th degree tears on here. They're pretty rare per my doctor, she said they have about one every six months in their 3 doctor practice. Not to threadjack, but what did other people's doctors say about your next go-round (if you want to have another)? Mine said she would endorse a c-section if I wanted. Just curious if anyone else was told the same thing.

I'm another 4th degree tear suffer-er and have wondered about what would happen with my next child.  I plan on asking when I have to go for my next annual.
  • I just read online recently that you should be offered an elective c section if you had third or fourth degree in previous birth. I have no idea if my doctor will really do this or what I'll decide... I'll have to do more research. I also may be OAD :)

Btw I did see a doctor yesterday (mine was on vacation). She thinks I am having pelvic floor issues that are causing extra moisture leading to basically diaper rash without the diapers. Good times. I have to follow up with my real doctor in two weeks.

It's probably best I did not know all the absurd things that could go wrong with my own body post baby :)
