This can't be true baby sleeping information can it??

DS has just started to sleep 8pm-5am and suddenly that stopped. Then he got a cold and bronchitis and was up every couple of hours. He is feeling better but still semi congested and so far since 8pm tonight is waking every 1.5 hours. So naturally I sit with him and google how to make my baby sleep. Ha! Well one advice giver said to learn the babies natural waking time (5:45 here. Eek!) and got 12 hours back. Put the baby down for the night at the time.
So seriously put the baby down around 6pm? Doesn't that seem early? He is usually in his crib for the night around 7:3/8. Anyone ever follow this type of advice and put the baby to bed that early?
Did it work? I'll try anything haha. It's been almost 3 weeks of not sleeping more than 3 consecutive hours.. I'm so tired :(
(This is obviously not going to work if he is sick I do realize that).

  • Dd goes to bed at 6:30 so 6 doesn't seem that early. We did try to change her bedtime to 7:30 once and it threw off her sleeping so much I never wanted to try again. So, May as well try it. You can always adjust it later.

DD is 3 and she goes down at 6:30. But she doesn't nap, and as a baby it was 8. The got pushed more and more forward. I just can't imagine expecting a 4 month old to stay in the crib 12 hours a night. Although they say sleep begets sleep... Might be worth a try.

Seems crazy to me! My DD is four months and recently started waking every couple of hours too. It's so rough, I feel your pain! We put her in at 8 and she's up between 6 and 7am. According to the baby sleep charts I've seen, when they're 3-6 months they should sleep about 10 or 11 hours at night. There's no way I could get up at 5:45, so I'm opting for 8pm bedtime still. I'm hoping the frequent wakings are a phase while our babies are learning something. Right? It's just a phase? My DS did the same thing for a while around the same age, and by six months he was back to normal, which for him was 2 night feeds. Anyway, good luck! If you can get up at 5:45, I'd say try the 6 bedtime. If it makes him sleep longer at night, at least you'd be rested for your early wake up time! Edit for sleepy nonsensical-ness.

Do you think the sudden sleep change is the 4 month regression? DD never did any of this. She was a great sleeper from 6 weeks. Still is.

I told DH all I want for my birthday this month is to sleep 12 hours uninterrupted.. Haha. This is rough! I don't know how to end this wakeful stage.
And I feel like he isn't getting the proper sleep either if he's up all night.
I may try the super early bedtime just to see. Then I'll put DD to bed and hop into my own bed by 6:45. That way I can sleep more haha! Bc the early wake up call sucks.

  • I can't see how old your DS is so take this with a grain of salt, but if DD had gotten sick or was just in general not sleeping well, I always put her to bed early. Even now that she's almost 2, I still do that. For some reason, instead of sleeping like a normal person would when they're sick or tired, babies like to combat their sleepiness with even less sleep and crazy shenanigans in their crib in the middle of the night ;)

I don't know about going back 12 hours but for babies it seems like sleep begets sleep. More never seemed to hurt DD and generally helped her get back on track. Hope you both get some sleep soon!!

Well, she wasn't sleeping 12 hours a night at that point but she would only get up once instead of 3 or 4 times. But I dunno it could be anything from sleep regression to teething to being over tired or a dozen other things. Hope he lets you get some sleep!!

  • I'm with you. We are on 3 weeks of waking every 1.5 hours. DS is 6 months old. He used to wake up once at 230am the first 5 months. This is horrible. I tried putting him to bed at 6. He wakes up at 8 and is up til 10. He usually is up for the day at 630.

  • My kids have always gone up to bed at 6:30. And on a bad day when they're exhausted, I've done 6. I did it last night. They were passed out by 6:45.

I've gotten lazy this summer and it hasn't sent things to hell, but I agree with lala, normal bedtime is 6:30 or 7 here no later and definitely earlier if they're being stinks.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • Bedtime has always been 7ish for us, but lately since they've dropped down to 1 nap we've been starting the process as early as 6 PM. They wake up at 6:30ish am (sometimes 7....one glorious day they slept til 7:30).

I'd say the earlier bedtime is worth a shot.....good luck and I hope you all get some zzzs soon!

  • I've read books that say put baby down around 6-6:30.  I find that newborns don't ever do that.  They like to go to bed around midnight.  Right now my 6month old is usually going to bed around 6 which I dislike.  When she was a newborn, even if we put her down at that time, she would wake up after only a nap.

You people muzt be so much more organized thann I am. I can barely get dinner on the table at 630. I can't imagine starting baths and whatnot at 6. Were still playing outside/visiting my parents/ watching tv
I spend naptime (from about 2-5) prepping dinner so that by about 4:45 I can throw it in to cook. Dinner is ready by about 5:15-5:30 and then DD can go to bed whenever. We also do bath time after breakfast. She usually stinks of pee and then makes a huge mess while eating so that's out of the way too.

It may look like organization. It's really just me doing things in different orders ;)

  • We don't do baths at night. She only takes a bath every other day in the summer and less in the winter because her eczema is awful otherwise. I give her one in the morning. So dh gets home at 4:00, that's gives us 2.5 hours until bed time so it isn't a rush or anything. If dh worked later, it would be different.

  • Up until almost 2? Reese put her self to sleep at 5:45-6:30. Unfortunately DH didn't come home until then, so they had only a few minutes to spend together. However, she was MISERABLE and crabby if she didn't go to sleep at that time, so it wasn't worth it. Now? she goes to sleep between 7:00-8:00; however 6:30 if she skipped a nap or a long day.

  • DS has always gone to bed at 6:00 and that's when he chose bedtime to be. DD goes down a bit later, at 6:30 but only because it's easier to put DS to bed first.

I don't see what the big deal is with an infant going to bed so early.

I don't think it's a huge deal really.  I just always sort of rolled my eyes on the tri boards and stuff when my kids were that age and people were all "OMG your 6 month old must be in bed in 6:30" like they had the magical key to sleep.  That's not real life for most families in this day and age.  Their SAHM privilege was showing:)

If people said that a 6mo old must be in bed by 6:30 Id roll my eyes too ;) Thankfully, DD has always needed/wanted a lot of sleep. We didn't start early bedtime just to keep to a schedule that had to be adhered to, more so because she was just a miserable cranky butt otherwise. We also found out that for her (since she needs so much sleep) that if she was sick, a few days of going to bed earlier set her back on track quicker. Whatever floats your boat kiddo.
