New here-mono/di twins

Hi all!
My dh and I found out almost 2 months ago that we're having mono/di twins. I'm 16 wks now, due on Christmas. This is my first pregnancy and it was such a shock to find out there's two! My dh was so rattled he left the keurig going at work and walked away, u/s pics and coffee cup in hand the next day! We're both extremely excited but I have so many questions and concerns too. I just want these little lives to be healthy!
For those of you with mono/di twins, how closely were you monitored? I've started twice a month u/s now and see a perinatologist in addition to an ob.
Also, if there are any fellow teachers on the board (I teach middle school), how did you handle the later months?
Thanks for any advice, I know I'll be wondering how this twin adventure works and appreciate the vibe I have gotten from lurking a bit.

  • Congrats and welcome!  Sorry I can't answer your question about mo/di twins, but I am also a teacher.  I teach special education and I just accepted a new position at a new school a week before finding out I was pregnant.  While pregnant with DD also due in the fall I tried to stay off my feet as much as I could and I made a list of all the things I needed to get done before I left and tried to get them done about a month before the due date.  I will probably do the same thing with these twins.

  • I am 32 weeks with mono/di twins and I started seeing an MFM every 2 weeks right around the beginning of 2nd tri and have done so since. Congrats and welcome!
  • I am also mono/di and 15 weeks I don't see MFM for another two weeks after pretty much fighting with my OB to go there. My OB didn't think I needed to be following by MFM but after advice from lovely ladies here I pushed for it. I am also nervous n would love to read the responses you get ! Congrats
  • Your monitoring sounds right on track. I am a high school math teacher and worked to the end of the school year which was 32 weeks for me. That ironically was the week my doctor said she would have taken me out of work as I was beginning to dialate. I taught sitting as much as possible and my students knew they had to come to me with questions. Also make sure your administration is aware. We had a mid-year change that year and I was quick to let it be known that I would not be up and around my room any more than necessary. Yourself and your babies are the priority right now, not your students. GL!

  • I'm an early intervention speech pathologist-busy with preschoolers! and at 28 weeks I went part time because it was just too much. I couldn't get through a full 40 hr week. I had my girls at 34wk, 4 days.

  • Hi and welcome! My mo/di boys are 10 weeks tmrw. I first saw MFM at almost 12 weeks to confirm mo/di. Then I went every two weeks starting at 16 weeks. One growth scan each month and the other appt to check fluid and signs of TTTS. At 32 weeks I started twice weekly NSTs and started spending more time with my OB and only saw MFM monthly for growth scans. At 32 weeks I was admitted with symptoms of PTL- contracting every 2 min and some dilation. I was sent home after two rounds of steroids and when my contractions were 5-7 min apart. Everyone thought those babies were coming! I was induced at 37 weeks and 4-5cm and 80% effaced. I contracted regularly every day for five weeks! I was never on bed rest and was encouraged to remain active even after the PTL scare. I had a relatively easy vaginal delivery and my boys were 5lb10oz and 7lb! My DD was 23 months when the twins were born. Try not to worry unless there is a reason to. Just make sure you are being closely monitored and listen to your body. The contractions started after a weekend of hard core painting. I def overdid it, even though the doctors said nothing I did could have caused PTL, it just happens. I took it easy after that but was still out walking regularly until the day I delivered. Hope my story helps. :)
  • It's so nice to see other mono/di moms, I only know fraternal moms irl and their advice is awesome but none of them had the same type of monitoring I will.
I'm glad to hear my routine is the norm, I want these little babies to get the absolute best care.
To the other teachers/school workers, thanks for the tips. I'll definitely build in some good routines the first month or so that will allow my students to be independent.
  • I have one year old mono/di boys. I saw the MFM doctors right from the beginning when I found out I was pregnant with identical twins. We had an ultrasound every 2 weeks until 32 weeks. At 32 weeks we started having an ultrasound every week with twice a week non stress tests. I am a special education teacher and worked until 32 weeks when the school year ended. My timing worked out perfectly because I was getting big and uncomfortable. I maybe could have worked another week or two but it would have been hard. Good luck!
  • My mo/dis are now 18 months old. I had a similar monitoring schedule; they actually had a growth discordance in utero, which was spotted around 15 weeks, so the TTTS monitoring was key. Later on I also got weekly BPPs and NSTs every 3 days (I was BFFs w/ the ladies at the MFM desk at the hospital :P). Delivered at 35 weeks 4 days when their growth difference surpassed 20%. They were healthy and needed minimal NICU time.....one was just bigger than the other (and still is, actually).

I was a teacher too, but I didn't make it past 25 weeks teaching b/c of a PTL scare. Many other teachers last much longer, though. If you do, definitely make resting throughout the day a priority! GL!
