https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2687553/Outrage-novelty-monkey-T-shirt-photographed-hanger-depicting-head-African-American-boy.html Someone thought putting a hanger of a African American boy picture on a child's t-shirt of a monkey. Who thought that was appropriate?????

Re: Anyone see this racist shit

  • That's an unfortunate hanger choice.
  • Loading the player...
  • Idk if it was done intentionally, I really hope not, but if not how did not occur to this salesperson that is it's wrong.
  • @Inkogneetoh, you've rarely heard monkey used for a Black person? It is a pretty well know one unfortunately.

I have only ever heard of this on the bump but that might just be my Canadian showing.

  • It's the Daily Mail, so right away I give this a side-eye.

We can't see what is on the shirts behind the front one, so how do we know that someone didn't switch one shirt onto the black kid hanger, hang it in front, and then take the picture in order to manufacture drama and outrage?

A retailer would not purposefully display merchandise, which they have paid for and want to move, in a racist manner that would stop customers from buying it. If this is real, which I doubt, either it was an innocent mistake or a rogue employee.

But I'd bet my bank account on fake.
Well, unless it's photoshopped, you can see identical hair lines going all the way to the back of the racks.

  • Have none of you that don't know this term seen Clerks 2? There's a reason they want the skinny white guy to stop calling himself a porch monkey.

    Fuck you, bump.

  • Right. Same hanger all the way back. Same shirt? We can't tell.

I think she means what's on the other shirts behind this one, not the faces.
Clearly a reading fail on my part. Sorry!

I'm really surprised that people, in the U.S especially, don't know it. There was a single black family at my HS, and I knew the term, because racist people. I, unfortunately, know way too many derogatory terms for Hispanic people.

You may be right. When I moved south, I referred to a few of my elementary school students who were being super hyper as "little monkeys" and another teacher pulled me aside and kindly told me that it was an inappropriate thing to say. I was dumb-founded, but I have been more careful since then.

I would file this under "unfortunate error" until I saw the confederate one. Now I'm giving it the side-eye.

  • I'm sure there's a possibility it's a hoax, I'm sure there's a possibility that this person didn't put the shirt on the hanger, but some other asshole did, to be "funny", but it also wouldn't surprise me if it's legit, because I've met a lot of racist assholes/

I hadn't considered that a customer had done it because they thought it would be funny to start a controversy.
  • SO tells me I shouldn't call LO a little monkey in public because he's half black. Even when he's acting like a monkey, which he does frequently.

The little boy with the monkey is culturally/racially insensitive. The confederate solider, racist. And Canadian bumpie, please don't give me that "I am from Canada so I am clueless about such racial slurs" crap. Some of the biggest racists I have ever known were from Calgary Alberta

  • I am kind of shocked that people don't know that monkey is a racial slur. And also I legit lol'd at " it would racist for a black kid to wear a monkey shirt".

I think I never heard it before the bump because there isn't much racism towards black people here. It's mostly hate towards Phillipinos taken er jerbs and First Nations people drinking away welfare checks.

That doesn't mean I personally have heard it. Don't judge me because you knew racist people from Calgary. I never said I was clueless about racial slurs. I said I had never heard this one. Maybe because all Canadians aren't like the ones you met.

    Countryist.

  • I'm from New England and knew of that racial slur but have never heard it IRL. I never think of it unless someone points it out. I don't know if it speaks to the lack of racism in my little world or my obliviousness, but it would never occur to me that a black head with a monkey shirt would mean anything.

I don't think she was implying that there are no racists in Canada, but rather that that slur was not one she had come across before in Canada. There is a geography of language or as @mcbenny would say "it's a regional thing".

Exactly. I have heard it (and worse) from SOME Canadians. So it's not just a U.S. thing.

I side eye the company for making the rebel shirt. Wtf is with that? Who would buy that? Racists.

Southerners touring Civil War sites? I know they also sell a Lincoln one, because I saw it at the Abraham Lincoln Museum. I agree that it's icky to sell them, and make money off other people's racism, but I don't think it makes the company owners themselves racists for supplying a demand. A little ethically loose, but what capitalist company isn't?

Yeah... I call BS on this
