How long did your NT scan take?

I know it can vary depending on how the baby is positioned and if they have a hard time getting the measurements. But they told me to plan 90 minutes to 2 hours?! That seems like a really long time?

I only wonder because DH has to take time off work to meet me there and walk around the hospital with DD because she isn't allowed in the ultrasound room. I don't think my 2 year old will be ok for 2 hours especially during her (missed) nap time.

Please tell me it won't really take that long!

Re: How long did your NT scan take?

  • Haven't had mine this time yet, but last time it was about 90 min. First, I met with a genetic counselor, then a long ultrasound, then they drew blood. If you add a little wait time to that, I can see why they would say 2 hours.

  • It depends on how many techs/medical staff they have on hand, how many other patients are there as well and how long they take.

Ours took close to 90 minutes from registration, to u/s, to blood work and meeting with the genetic counselor. And that was with a pretty light crowd in the waiting room. Our u/s took close to a half hour since baby didn't want to remove his/her hands from their face.

  • I was there for about an hour.  Waiting room for 20mins, actual ultrasound was only about 5 mins, urine sample, blooddraw then met with doc and chatted for about 10 mins.

  • Ok, they said I won't be meeting with a genetics counselor at all, so hopefully that will shave off some time!

  • My appt took about 40 minutes but 20 or so of that was the lab tech trying to find a vein.  The actual ultrasound was probably 10 or 15?

Mine was about 45 minutes. I only had to do blood work (and it was a hard stick, so that took some time), and then the ultrasound wasn't very long at all.
  • They had me schedule an hour for all of it (ultrasound, blood draw, etc.) That would have been totally fine, but the office was running behind, and my baby was NOT cooperating :) My ultrasound was much longer than it would normally be because they were having a hard time getting the baby in the right spot.

The same thing happened with my son too. I guess I have stubborn kids.

  • Mine was about 45 min too.  10 min in waiting room, 5 min for the ultrasound, 10 min to wait for doctor, 10 min to talk to doctor, and 10 min to give blood.

  • I'm curious, for those that say the ultrasound was only 5 minutes, did they check everything on your baby, or just the NT measurements? Mine was longer because the baby wouldn't get in the right position for the NT measurements for quite some time, but they also measure and take images of all of the "parts" while we are there.

I feel like they can't possibly do all of that in 5 minutes, so I was just curious.

  • 20 mins with the genetic counselor and 20-30 mins for the ultrasound because the little one wouldn't corporate.

  • Mine was about 15 minutes for the actual ultrasound.  I also had to wait in separate area for blood work, that took longer. The poke was 5 minutes- the wait was more like 20.  All in all, it was under and hour.

  • I wish they had told me 90 minutes to 2 hours.  They told me 1 hour.  It was much closer to two.  Met with the genetic counselor, wait, u/s, wait, and then blood draw.

Mine was about 20-30 mins for ultrasound and blood draw (finger prick). Didn't do anything else at that appointment. She said it can go more quickly but baby wouldn't get in correct position. I had to keep twerking on the table! I don't know if that really helps or if she was just effing with me, ha.
  • Mine was 30 and Peanut was a bit uncooperative. Should be quicker normally :)

  • Thanks everyone! It sounds like they said up to 90-120 minutes just in case but hopefully it won't take that long.

I don't know why I'm worried about it since DH will be the one dealing with the tantrums, not me. Haha ;)

  • They were running 45 minutes late. The ultrasound tech said that all the babies were uncooperative, that day, and ours was no exception. She spent a solid half hour, maybe longer, trying to get the right shots for the NT.
Looking forward to meeting our first child in January 2015!

  • I think it really depends on how baby is positioned and how full your bladder is. We went in for ours last week and baby was bouncing around like a maniac and they were unable to measure so had us come back 2 days later. Baby was in a ball and bladder wasn't full enough this time. They gave my wife some water and had her do some activity in the room for about 20' them baby fell asleep and was in a great position. Got measurement, blood drawn and it all took just about 2 hours... Got results back this week and everything is looking good. Go back for second blood draw at the end of the month.
