Re: "The Crumbling Post 35 Pregnancy Myth"

  • Good article! Thanks for sharing! I don't see why people make such a big deal out of it in the first place. If you're fortunate enough to get pregnant at an "older age" then more power to you! Gone are the days when it was the norm to get pregnant at 18. And really, seeing how 18 year olds and even some 20 year old's are nowadays, that is a scary thought!

  • A huge thumbs up to this article. I should show this to all those people who think I’m crazy for trying so “late”.

    Thanks for posting!

  • "The popular assumption that most over-35 mothers are “driven career women” is a myth with a strong undercurrent of misogyny around women’s role in the workplace."

    RIGHT ON.
Me: 38 DH: 40 TTC#1 (and likely only) since 9/13. Saw RE 5/14, SA good, AMH 2.36, FSH 7.2, estradiol 69.6 indicating good egg reserve. Using OPKs. First Letrozole cycle 6/14, a burst cyst and a BFN. Second Letrozole cycle 7/14, BFN.

Update 11/14 - had laparoscopy 10/28, good news is that my uterus and left tube look good, and they were able to drain the cyst on my left ovary. Bad news is that right tube and ovary have endo and scar tissue, so they're pretty useless.. Best news is that we finally have some answers and a path forward. Taking 7.5 mg letrozole CD 2-6 to put that good left ovary through its paces.

UPDATE 2/2015 - We switched to another fertility clinic, but fortunately we don't have to start all over. We're doing two cycles of Clomid plus IUI, if neither of those take, we'll do IVF in April, potentially with ICSI. (DH's SA has gone downhill, likely due to excessive exercise.) IUI#1 2/25/15....

    RIGHT ON.
Very true.  Still, nothing wrong with being a "driven career woman" if you are one.

Happy Friday to all of us over-35ers!! :D

  • I just hate the stereotype that if you're over 35, you went gonzo for your career, and then decided to have a family at the last minute.

If that's the case, then I really screwed up because I'm a bloody receptionist.

  • Yeah, I agree.  We're definitely not a one-size-fits-all group.  That stereotype does indeed suck.

Indeed... Women in general, before and after 35, are all different and we should all be allowed to make whatever choices we want without being subject to microscopic scrutiny.
  • Thanks for posting this. I particularly appreciated this statement....

"Sure, we were tired when they were babies, but who isn’t? I do sometimes wish I’d had children earlier when I had more energy, but overall the benefits of later motherhood have far outweighed the costs."

I believe this, but appreciate hearing it from someone else. A little validation goes a long way.

Thanks for sharing. The surprising effect of TTC (#1) later in life is that it's already made me less judgemental of moms in all phases.
I hear ladies talking about how happy they are that they had their kids young and I have to remind myself that everyone's path is different. They probably faced plenty of challenges and judgement as a young mom but are making the best of it, just like all I can do is be as positive as possible about being older.

Married in 2006, TTC #1 since Jan 2012

Baby Boy born June 1, 2015

He settles her in her home as a happy mother of children, praise the Lord! (Psalms 113:9)
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understand, will guard your heart and mind in Jesus Christ (Philippians 4:7)

  • That's great!!! And I am a definitely the example of meeting my partner later in life. I didn't even get married until 30 and we actually got pregnant with my first a bit sooner than planned. Would I have liked to have had kids younger? Sure! But, I was so immature in my 20's and still sometimes find myself a bit immature at 35. ;) I am certainly not very career driven. I work to live, not live to work....and I certainly have more money now than I did when I was in my 20's!

  • I totally would have had kids before age 38-- had I found my husband earlier in life. Or if MH and I were in a place where we weren't both trying to change careers at the same time when we first got together.

But thank goodness, I waited because I am WAY less uptight/controlling than I was when I was younger and I am a better mother for it, I am sure.

Now, if I could just get pregnant this time in under a year, I'd really love it. This almost-40 year old needs some sleep before she's 45!
