I had a friend in college with one. It was cute but nocturnal, so it often woke her at night and wasn't super entertaining in the day. I'm not sure that is specific to the species or just her quirky pet. FWIW I knew a lady with a chinchilla that was the same way (the chinchilla, not the lady).
I haven't personally, but one of my good friends had one. It was super cute and easy to take care of. She had him in a small cage in her living room. Once he got to know you he would cuddle up with you when you were just hanging out. He was only pokey when nervous. Sadly he got a tumor/cancer and died. I'm not sure if that is a common thing in hedgehogs or not though.
I had one! Actually, I've had three, one wa awesome (a female) and my other 2, a male and a female were not as awesome. The amount of time you spend with them directly correlates to their level of awesomeness. They can be a bit stinky, especially males, if you aren't on top of cleaning their cage. However, they are fairly toilet trainable in that they will potty in a general corner of their cage. Unfortunately like PP mentioned, they are somewhat prone to cancer.

I was also going to suggest a chinchilla! I had one for about 14 years. They dont smell and you can train them to use a litter box! They are also super cuddly and not as pokey! Ours would run free around the house when we would play with him! Best pet ever! They also live much longer than most pets we got him after a really bad run with to many hamsters.
Chinchillas can be difficult and feisty depending. You have to be careful with them as they can't get their skin wet (at least not often or to wet). They are nocturnal as well and need to run around or they are grumpy.
hedgehogs are a little lower maintance, same deal though they need attention or else they will be grumpy towards you. They are nocturnal.
(I know a little more about chinchillas rather than hedgehogs)
Hedgehogs are not low maintenance. Not in the least. The require a heat lamp and a lamp timer. They have to stay a certain temp during certain times and then not at certain times, but they never should get cold in the least. They need a fairly large cage as well. They eat a high quality grain free cat food and crickets. Hedgehog diets are crap. They can be very temperamental and not the greatest with kids since their quills can be pokey and small children don't like this. They require a lot more work than people think. Plus finding a vet that takes one is pretty hard, more so if something goes wrong.

Yeah, I just read about them poking little kids by mistake, so they're probably a no go here.
I really would love to get another cockatiel or even a sun conure, but my last bird used to bite all the time because he was a little cranky pants, and I wouldn't want little fingers or ears getting nipped at.
I guess I should probably just stick with my dogs... maybe get a puppy! Lmao.
Suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste,
It all revolves around you.
Honestly, if I ever wanted a cute, fun, low maintenance animal, that would be good with kids. I'd go get myself another persian or himalayan. sure, they have fur you need to bathe and brush occasionally, but their upkeep is less than any small caged animal and way less work than a dog. Yeah clean a litter box (or don't and get an automatic one), feed them, and brush them sometimes. I say those breeds cuz from experience they seem to be the most chill of the cat world.
Other than that... Guinea pigs and bunnies aren't too bad and can be more fun than any other small furry thing.

I've owned and loved guinea pigs, but J doesn't like either guinea pigs or bunnies.
He also doesn't like cats, which although he seems to be coming around on, I also happen to be highly allergic to the majority of them, so the chances of us getting one is minimal, at best.
Boo.

Gah, that sucks! I lurve cats. I also lurve dogs. What about a domesticated skunk? They are like cats, only weirder therfore cuter.
