3D Ultrasounds?

What is everyone's thought on 3D ultrasounds?

My SIL's doctor did them everytime instead of regular ultrasounds, but I have Kaiser so I'd need to go spend $$ someplace to get it done.

Yes, I agree they are super creepy, but I'd sure love to see what the baby really looks like (maybe it's only creepy when it's someone else's uterus...)

Are you doing one?  If so, when?

  • I will get one done. I had one done with DD at the same gestation that my son.was born (25w5d). I plan to do the same with this little guy.
  • They switched it over with my first during a growth u/s and we got an elective done with my second. Depending on H's schedule we might get another elective one this go around to find out the sex. I might be in the minority, but I love them.

  • Oh and the one with my first was done at 30wks, the one with my second was done at 19.5wks. The 30wks one looked better and gave me a better picture of what his face was going to look like, but the 19.5wk one was so much more fun. We got a video and a ton of pictures.

  • They switched it over when doing the a/s and it was super creepy; the baby has like zero fat on his body so he looked really creepy and skinny. Once they get bigger I understand getting them done. I had one done with DS and he refused to show his face so it was a big waste of money. I will not be getting one this time.

My last US when I found out the sex was 3d and 4d and it was def creepy!
  • Oh I don't think it's creepy I think it's so neat I had it with DD and now I'm getting one done on Monday for this one to find out the sex. It's really neat to feel kicks from the baby as you're seeing it on the screen happening. And the place I go to you get video too of the session.

Nope not getting one. We've opted out of everything that was optional. I feel like everyone's baby in an ultrasound looks the same anyways. I don't think it would truly give picture of what baby will look like. We can wait a few more months and see what baby will really look like.

  • I think they are cool looking too. The one's that were posted in the first tri were fascinating looking. I love being able to see a more detailed picture of how they develop.
  • Probably won't be doing an elective one.

When I had my older son, the doctor did a 3D ultrasound for free at 28 weeks or something like that. My son didn't really look much like the pics when he was born. Plus it was kinda weird and creepy looking. Needless to say, we didn't bother with my second son and won't do it with this kiddo either.
  • Oh man. I think the 3d u/s with my first (30wks) looked just like my son. It was crazy because I knew it was technically a picture of him but it was still crazy. The early one didn't give a great picture but the facial expressions were right on.

The MFM office where I had my NT scan (and where I will be having my a/s) has the capability.  During the NT scan the tech flipped it on and we were able to get 1 pic.  I'm hoping they will do the same during the a/s, but its doubtful that I will go out of my way to ask them to.
  • I did one to find out the sex of the baby, because I am impatient and didn't want to wait for the anatomy scan (and a lot of the time the tech won't tell you anyway because they legally aren't supposed to). Other than that I will not be doing one.

  • I had one done at 14 weeks to determine the sex, and will do another at 28 weeks cuz I think they're cool.

Haha they look SUPER creepy!! I got one done while i was in for my ultra sound yesterday (I'm in Ontario, so it didn't cost me anything to get it done, so my friend who was doing the scan and I played around a little).. 18 weeks isn't the best time to do it. I attached the 3D shot of my lil man.

  • They do it automatically at my hospital, but I received an advertisement in the mail for some place that does it electively. So weird to me. I'm not paying money to see what looks like a claymation version of the child I'm going to meet in a few months, anyway.

Why just plan a wedding when you can plan a baby AND a wedding?

I had my a/s on Tuesday with a follow up with my doctor on Thursday and my doctor asked me what the sex was because the ultrasound office only distributed the measurements and sizes to them. She said they keep it that way for team green families and only the ultrasound tech knew the sex.

  • The machine at my OB's office takes 2- and 3-D images. I didn't pay for them with my first (when my doctor didn't have the capability). I find them creepy and don't feel like they give a very good sense of what baby looks like at all.
This exactly. The tech at my OB's office will look at the 3D and 4D images during our anatomy scan and include a few in the pictures she prints out. I also find them creepy and would not want a ton of pics/cd. But that is just me.

  • We usually get the regular ones and are fine with it, but the last time the doctor took a few "shots" with the 3D untra sound and we were able to see our little girl sucking her thumb as she slept. It was quite special to have seen that. I don't know if I'd need one every time I went, but seeing it once was great.
  • They are kinda cool. Especially the last few weeks of pregnancy. Although I would not pay extra for one. That's just me though. I can be cheap like that.

I did not have one with the first 3. The hospital my OB uses for ultrasounds has 3D and if you are nice to the tech, they sometimes will switch to one if they have time.  When I switch over to the OB that is going to be preforming my Csection (after next months appt. I had her with the last kidlet) I get them in office and tech will sometimes do one.

  • I think they're fascinating, but I think a lot of medical things are really interesting.  Maybe I should have been in the medical field rather than taxes lolol.  My OB almost exclusively does them, and my babies face looked really similar to my husbands even at 15 weeks. I have my anatomy scan tomorrow, so I'm excited to see little dude again.  Last time he was playing with his umbilical cord haha.

  • I think they are kinda cool and kinda creepy, lol.  We didn't do them last time and probably won't this time because our insurance doesn't cover them.  It would've been $300+ to do them and we would rather spend the money elsewhere.
