Hello all--
I'm a fitness enthusiast and group exercise instructor who currently teaches 1-2 classes/week and works out an additional 2-4 days a week. I primarily teach cycle/spin and athletic conditioning. I'm 16 weeks and feeling great; in fact, I attribute my smooth first tri to staying regularly active.
My gym is planning our fall schedule that runs Sept. 1 through Dec. 31 and I'm due Dec. 29. If it continues to feel great, I'd like to continuing teaching until the baby comes (and I've of others doing this too).
My question for you other instructors and/or those who regularly work out, until when did you teach? Did you find one format more challenging or prohibitive?
Re: Fitness instructors: teaching through term?
I taught yoga before I was on mat leave. I had my doctor fill out a PAR-MedX form for me (basically a prescription for exercise - they're Canadian like me but you can find them online). It has what you can and can't do based on your pregnancy.
My EDD was October 31 (DS born October 26). I teach at a local rec centre. I have decent sized classes, have been teaching for about 5 years, and most of my students have been longtime students with me And I know them well.
I used to teach 3x a week. Mondays right after work, Tuesdays at 7:15 pm, and Saturday mornings. In April of last year I told the director that I had to drop the Tuesday class because it was just too late for me because of the exhaustion (also when I told him I was pregnant). I also dropped the Saturday class because I was so tired all the time. I kept the Monday class, because I didn't want to completely drop my commitment. It was hard - I also work full time as a teacher (high school).
There are lots of things I couldn't do, but I'm the instructor, so I didn't plan those things. Yoga is also a bit different as I don't do the whole class with them bc I'm correcting form. Sometimes I would just tell them what to do - if I wanted to include something that was contraindicated for pregnancy. My participants also knew I was pregnant, so it was no big deal for me to take a break if needed.
The centre and participants were really good about it. They didn't want me to leave, but completely understood. I taught until June, because we don't have full programming in the summer. I prob could have gone longer, but didn't want to start in September because that schedule also goes to December.
I also teach group fitness, but wasn't at that time due to scheduling conflicts.
I think everyone was ok with me all of a sudden stopping because we've been together a long time, I was always reliable, and we were close knit.
Good luck.
