Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Did you travel with a 6-9 month old?

We are planning a vacation to the Dominican Republic in December. DD will be about 7 months then, and I want to start thinking about what I may need to take with us (for example, summer clothes for her will be easier to buy now than in December, etc.)

If you traveled with a 6 to 9 month old baby to a tropical location, what did you take with you? What did you do about food? Any other tips you can share?

TIA!

  • We traveled at 9 months. Umbrella stroller was a must, for both the airport and the resort. Bring way more clothes than you think you need. Some days we were in 3 outfits because of sunscreen and such. Make sure to have extra clothes on the plane - ds had diaper blowouts as we were getting off the plane twice (luckily none got in the carseat!)

We used food pouches for the most part, along with yogurt from the resort for breakfast. Pouches were great because they packed easily in the suitcase and diaper bag. We went through a lot of wipes between wiping down surfaces, hands, and diaper changes. We also found disposable bibs much easier for catching food messes.

I brought a sponge and dish soap to clean bottles and sippy cups. Make sure you have plenty of formula (if using) and diapers because they will be outrageously expensive in most tropical locations.

  • We split up our food pouches between carry on and checked luggage because we were hassled before about bringing too much in our carry on.  Don't sweat it if your baby doesn't eat much of any solids on the trip.  Every vacation we've taken DS on turns into a small amount of solid eating.  If she is doing any puffs, bring those on the plane.  Make sure you pack sunscreen because that will be crazy expensive and might be hard to find baby sunscreen.  I would also pack some of the small pouches of laundry detergent.  That way, if you have any soiled clothes, you can wash them out instead of packing them in your luggage.  If it is hot there in December, you might want to bring a clip on fan for the stroller.

  • I went to Dominican Republic with my 7  month old!

I can't say too much that the other ladies haven't already answered but I will say that the Ergo was too hot to wear, so we were happy we brought our BOB- which worked excellent on sand. But we didn't use our carrier very much, just on the transfer bus to and from the hotel. But you can wear baby in the airport through security and/or also check your stroller at the gate.

We paid a little extra to bring our pack and play because I was worried about the crib situation at the hotel so you could do that or check with your hotel to confirm what they have. Low and behold, when we arrived, just as it was time for my LO's bedtime…there was no crib. I knew my LO would sleep in HIS p&p so I was happy I brought it. We also tried to keep the routine the same every day/night and he slept really quite well!

We brought lots of snacks (yogurt melts, puffs and rice cakes etc…) but otherwise I was still breastfeeding and we did BLW so just gave our LO solids off of our plate, he ate really well. Loved mango on a stick and banana bread.  And we brought pouches too.  I brought my bottle wash, brush, pump etc so I could have a night out with my girlfriend too, with a few drinks, it was fun!

Brought my own bowls/spoons/snack cups/straw cups. Also brought a shaded baby float, which was awesome for the pool

    Have fun!

  • I didn't read all the words, but my go to travel rec is disposable bibs. They sell a 24 pack at Target for about $5 and it is so much better than having dirty bibs to deal with.

  • If you don't want to get disposable bibs, you can always use a chip clip and a napkin :) My mom does that with a dish towel for ours when she hasn't cleaned her bib.

We drove when we traveled. Those food pouches definitely came in handy!

  • In January we traveled to Colorado with DD. She was 9 MO. I overpacked her diaper bag, had a stroller, the car seat, and a bag for me. DONT DO IT! Pack enough diapers, wipes, and formula. Check out the airlines you are traveling with. We were able to go through security with baby formula and no one blinked an eye at us! They typically have a line for families with little ones too so watch the signs! We took one of the travel cases for formula (where it is preportioned out) a bottle with formula in it and carried a room temperature bottle of water. I fed her when the plane took off and again when it landed to ensure her ears were popped. Even if it wasnt a meal time i gave at least 2 ounces again to ensure she was full and comfortable. I ran her around the airport like a loon to make sure she was tired. Get a pacifier holder that clips to clothes so even if you clip it to the diaper bag its an easy find. Someone on here suggested overalls to travel in so we could clip toys to her! AMAZING SUGGESTION! I cant reitterate checking with your airline to see what you are able to check at the gate. We foolishly took our carseat so i could strap her in if there was room. You can go online the day before and see if every seat is taken. if so bag it and check. Also make sure you have birthcertificate lined up so you have that out of the way. i carried 1 folder with all of our important information, in her diaper bag, its one bag you will always have accessible if you are carrying baby.
