Breastfeeding

XP Teething and BF

I posted this on the LGBT parenting board that I am regularly on. But thought maybe I would get more response here. Quick and dirty background info on us..... Oliver is 7 months, I EBF (except a formula bottle at bedtime).  I work full time in an urban ER and don't get leisurely breaks to pump and the room to pump in is less than ideal. Here's my rant from tonight:

Can we talk a bit about teething and breast feeding? I had to pull the lanolin back out tonight because my nipples are so sore. Oliver keeps gumming the crap out of my nipples while he nurses. I have tried saying ow and taking him off but as soon as he is back on it starts again. He also bites down and then pulls to pop off at any little noise. I used I cherish these nursing sessions and now I dread them. He is comfort nursing at every 1-2 hours while we are awake bc his teeth hurt. Between this and my pumping conditions at work I am about ready to throw in the towel. Does it get better or worse once those teeth pop through? Ugh, someone talk me off the ledge and tell me it gets better.

Re: XP Teething and BF

  • My DS bit me once and sort of dragged off with teeth closed.  I was so surprised and in so much pain that I kind of gave him a stern "NO!" - the first time I've every spoken to him that way.  He was shocked and his little lip quivered, poor baby.  Somehow I think it registered, and he hasn't done something like that again.  Now he has a lot of teeth - about 4 upper and 3 lower.  Sometimes it is a little uncomfortable, but he has never bitten me again.

I would recommend the Mother Love Nipple Cream over Lanolin.  It is much more soothing.

  • We usually only do Tylenol or Motrin if he has a fever along with teething. We do cold rags, Popsicles, teethers, frozen fruit or ice in mesh bag. Today I have stopped letting him comfort nurse and only nurse when he is hungry. It seems to be helping some. Thanks for the ideas/suggestions! I think he may be doing a bit of a funky latch with his gums being sore also, so I am working on that too. Hopefully this only lasts a few days!
