I'm a huge caffeine addict. I have unsuccessfully tried to quit drinking the caffeine but have always failed. Any other addicts out there? Amy advice on going cold turkey?
I started switching out caffeinated things for other drinks. I usually had around 3-4 cups of coffee a day. I have one in the morning now. I also switched from soda (which I only had sometimes) to seltzer water when I want something bubbly. I try to make sure I get enough sleep too so that I'm not tired when I get up. Although being done with grad school has helped that a lot too!

I've tried cutting back, but I get irritable and when I'm stressed I feel like I need a diet coke asap. It's strange to day that but it's true. I'm just going to have to use more will power. I might try the crystal lite pouches. I've been told the artificial sweetener is bad in those but I suppose it would be the lesser of two evils.
I used to be able to drink a 12 pack of Dr. Pepper a day.
I started switching out my pop for water. First I would only let myself have a Dr. Pepper with each meal (even breakfast X_X ), then cut back to just lunch and dinner, then just dinner, and then just water. By that point I would get a mild headache in the evening. I drank one cup of coffee the first night of the headache and was fine the next day.
I do this whole process every few months, as soon as I let myself have one Dr. Pepper I'm hooked again and after a few weeks of constant caffeine I ween off of it again.
FWIW, the "safe" amount of caffeine during pregnancy is 200 milligrams.

I am going to preface this with the fact that I know this is my own issue and hang-up, but it really bugs me when people who are tired and get some coffee or a soda call themselves "addicts". Am I an addict? I like to say I am a recovering addict. From shit that sure as hell can't be bought at Starbucks. I went cold turkey when I wound up in the hospital.
Go ahead and flame away, folks. I know I'm standing on a soap box preaching.
As for caffeine, I started exercising more to improve my circadian rhythm and general energy level. And then I just stopped drinking caffeine. It has worked so far for the past 3 years. But if I stop working out, I definitely feel my overall energy dropping.
While not the same level, it absolutely is a physical addiction. If it was not, quitting would be easy.
Don't play Pain Olympics.
As I have a feeling there will be no adequate response to you, I will say, I know any substance that alters brain chemistry can be addicting. I prefaced my comment knowing it was a personal hangup and that it would likely upset someone. To edit now would be rude, I think. So, I'll leave it, acknowledge I'm an overly sensitive twat and hope that the advice about caffeine is helpful to the OP or anyone else having difficulty with a substance.
Both of my parents suffer from substance abuse. Alcohol and drugs for my father and alcohol for my mother. It never occurred to me that using the word addict would be a trigger and for that i apologize. Congratulations on your recovery.
Cutting back slowly never worked for me, unfortunately. One day I just stopped drinking it. I drank probably twice as much water in a day than I used to drink soda or coffee, and that seemed to help curb the caffeine headaches. I still have my occasional coffee because some days I need it dammit!!! But the fizziness of soda feels weird to drink now

I stopped drinking it now that we are TTC. I know they say a cup won't do anything but 1. I'm with you...I drank it all day. Being a teacher I got hooked on that afternoon boost. 2. If a lot is bad then a little isn't "healthy" and I felt it was better to just stop all together. 3. It gives me heartburn and I still drink it. It was time to stop.
I didn't go cold turkey though. Every morning I went to get coffee and each day I put a little less caffeinated and more decaf in the cup until I was drinking only decaf. Still got headaches for about 5 days and now I feel like I can say no. Good luck!!
When I got pregnant with my first baby, I quit cold turkey. I was a three cup of day coffee drinker and when I quit I had a splitting headache forms whole week. I know you can have something like 8 ounces of caffeine a day , but I found when I stopped drinking caffeine I woke up better rested and had healthier sleep habits overall. I've been breastfeding for 18 months and caffeine affects my milk supply makes my baby cranky and restless so I rarely drink it. I don't miss it though!
I love coffee. Love it. I'm trying currently to reduce my intake also, and I've slowly trimmed the quantities. So far so good, just take it slow if withdrawal is an issue (oh the headaches)
When pregnant with DD I "accidentally" went cold turkey. I was planning to enjoy my 200mgs a day but my HG kept me from drinking anything but Gatorade and ice chips. That sucked.
My question for you is- what do you normally drink in a day? A can of diet coke only has 45mgs of caffeine. 8 ounces of tea has anywhere from 30-75 mgs depending on type and brew time.
I was pretty bad about caffeine for awhile. I've switched to Caffeine Free Coke Zero when I'm craving a Coke, and I go more days without caffeine than with at this point and try not to have any after 3pm on the days I do. Cutting back over time reduced the amount of bad withdrawal headaches I had.
@MauiBliss As a recovering addict myself, I am going to agree with your previous statement, pain olympics or not. Quitting coffee can't kill you, or ruin your life mentally, physically, economically or socially. However, I do agree it's tough to quit and applaud OP for giving it a shot whatever the reason. My advice would be weening off as to avoid the headaches and potential grouchiness! Good luck!
MauiBliss you're not alone, but I am addicted to caffeine. I suffer from physical withdrawls I do not mentally have the same quirks with coffee that I do (or have thank God obsession is gone!) to other substances so her comment didn't bother me just giving a healthy shoult out to you as a fellow trudger... friend of Bill?

I've gotten out of the coffee habit, but do pop caffeine pills. I don't do well without them. I worry it's affecting my fertility. I have no advice, but you have my sympathy.

So today I have only had one can of diet coke in the am. I am doing okay but really wanted one around 2 o clock. I drank a couple of bottles of water. I May have a Co of coffee when I get home and then just do water the rest of the night. I know this sounds insane but diet coke and coffee feels like drinking a glass of wine. It relaxes me. I'm trying though.
I also was addicted to caffeine for years!! I just slowly weened myself off by replacing one caffeine drink with a caffeine free drink. Until I only drank caffeine free. I did have a headache for 2 weeks but I've been off caffeine and smoking for 2 years October 13th. Completely free of both. I know you can do it if you want to.
