Teething and BF

S/O of yoga nursing.... Can we talk a bit about teething and breast feeding? I had to pull the lanolin back out tonight because my nipples are so sore. Oliver keeps gumming the crap out of my nipples while he nurses. I have tried saying ow and taking him off but as soon as he is back on it starts again. He also bites down and then pulls to pop off at any little noise. I used I cherish these nursing sessions and now I dread them. He is comfort nursing at every 1-2 hours while we are awake bc his teeth hurt. Between this and my pumping conditions at work I am about ready to throw in the towel. Does it get better or worse once those teeth pop through? Ugh, someone talk me off the ledge and tell me it gets better.

Re: Teething and BF

  • Ouch!  Fortunately, I've only experienced an ouchie moment every now and then.  He does sometimes pull my nipple or do other weird things, but nothing super uncomfortable or painful. During my time on KellyMom, I've come across some articles about nursing manners that may help - https://kellymom.com/ages/older-infant/biting/

Also, I really do think things will calm down once those teeth pop through.  They did with Ash once his bottom two came through and I'm hoping that's the case again once these top two come through.  Nursing is okay, but he is super-duper clingy, which is both charming and difficult all wrapped into one.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that O's teeth come through soon!

No words of wisdom to add, but I can send hugs.  So frustrating and painful.  Luckily Gabe was never a persistant biter while nursing (though it would totally fit his personality to be).  For us, since nursing these days is mostly about comfort and routine before going to bed, when he does bite I can just take him off and tell him "All done."  He knows that if he bites, he won't get to nurse any more.  Not sure that would work for you though, if Oliver is still getting the bulk of his nutrition from nursing.

Good luck!  Teething is the worst.

  • Thanks all! We have been working on his latch today (I think it was a bit funky from his gums hurting) and I haven't allowed him to comfort nurse. This seems to be helping some so now when he does nurse he is actually hungry which is cutting down on the gumming/biting. Still not great, but I am no longer thinking about cutting him off completely! ;)
