Wellness Wednesday

So this is the first Health & Wellness check-in so feel free to post your ideas and suggestions :-)

How is the journey toward your health & wellness goal(s) going?  Any specific challenges or accomplishments this week?

QOTD: What is one of your favorite "tools" for reaching your goal(s)?

Re: Wellness Wednesday

Jazibel thank you for posting this!!  I was actually just thinking about this thread!

Right now my biggest goal is weight loss.  We've made food changes and started running (couch to 5K) so it more of a run/walk program.  So far the loss for me has been almost none, which is super discouraging after almost 2 months.  I know what we are doing is healthier in the long run, but at the same time its not motivating when you can't see any progress!  My wife on the other hand has lost almost 10 lbs in the last month and half and we do/eat the exact same thing!  Because of the lack of progress I've been a big ol' slacker on the running program this last week, we haven't done anything since last Thursday!  I'm a bad influence apparently- time to get back on the wagon.

Goal this week: run at least 3 times before next Wednesday!

QOTW:  I really like tech tools, so I use My Fitness Pal app to track food and I have a Fitbit to track my steps/activity.  I actually have the Fitbit for a wellness program at work to earn 'points' so it's a dual purpose tool!

Try not to let this discourage you.

Proof positive that all bodies are different: my wife is a professional in the health/fitness industry, and we were both elite level athletes.  For a while, we were training together and doing our best to eat the same things as well.  She gained weight, I lost weight (our goals were the exact opposite of that).  We really had to make some tweaks in our individual diets and modify our training programs in order to begin to see the results we wanted.

It could be that you process different types of foods differently.  For example I need starchy carbs (and lots of them) to stay sane, but also to build muscle.  My wife eats starchy carbs and blows up like a balloon.

I'd say that right now for you it seems like it's more about getting in the healthy habit of being active.  Once that becomes second nature to you, then I'd start worrying about results and maybe play with your diets a bit.

    Good luck!

** FTR - the above sounded a lot like I was trying to communicate a professional opinion.  Couldn't be farther from the truth.  Just wanted to share my personal experience. **

  • Hey folks. Have been intermittently lurking on the bump. Not ready to post regularly or even read regularly but I try to keep up with the basics (births, emergencies, BFPs). Anyway, I got on the scale this morning and my weight is as an all time high. Understandable given then amount of fast food, take out, and comfort food we have been living on and the amount of sitting around the house we have been doing. Am not beating myself up about it but also can't bear to go out to buy new clothes at this point. So I'm looking to send it (even if slowly) in the other direction.
I just re-downloaded my.fitness.pal. Screenname there is the same as here. Don't know how to follow people or add them, but if you want to add me that could be fun. :)
    ****loss discussed*****

We're queer. I'm 33, have severe stage 4 endo, and had both fallopian tubes removed. My love ("Manada" on the boards, 32) was diagnosed with diminished ovarian reserve. We did Partner IVF (my eggs, her uterus). We lost our twins Tavin and Casey at 21 weeks gestation.

    Our IUIs
with @Manada: IUI# 1-7 (December 2012- September 2013) all BFN. Tried natural, femara, clomid, puregon/follistim, clomid and menopur combo, both the ovidrel and HCG triggers.

    Our IVFs:
IVF #1 my eggs November/December 2013: Cancelled IVF due to poor response

    IVF #2 my eggs/Manada's uterus January/February 2014
BCPs and lupron overlap Stimmed: 1/22-2/2: Bravelle and Menopur (dosage ranged from B300 and M150 to B375 and M150 to B300 and M225)
2/4 retrieved 10 eggs. Endo was much worse than expected. Only 3 eggs fertilized; February 7 transferred two day 3 embryos, froze one. All great condition.
    BFP eve of 6dp3dt; Beta 1 (11dp3dt): 110; Beta 2 (13dp3dt): 175; Beta 3 (15dp3dt): 348; Beta 4 (19dp3dt): 2222; Beta 5 (21dp3dt): 4255
    1st ultrasound (3/6  6w 1d): TWINS!!!! Twin A measuring 6w1d with a heartbeat of 118bpm. Twin B measuring 6w0d with a heartbeat of 113bpm.

***July 18, 2014 we lost our beautiful babies at 21 weeks gestation. They were born too early. Tavin Sara T. and Casey Elizabeth T. are beautiful and precious and we will love them and miss them forever.***

    FET #1 December 2014
Intralipid infusion on Dec 10. Transfer of 1 day 3 nine-cell embryo into my uterus on Dec. 19. (acupuncture immediately before and after)

  • @healz413 & @twomomsinTX- I have myfitness pal too, though I haven't been as active on there as I want to be. I'll look at posting my info in this thread later today.

So I am struggling because I am about 80-90lbs from where I want to be (and 100lbs from my first pre-pregnancy weight).  I still love my body, but I'm frustrated by not having clothing choices, and feeling more physically tried when exercising, etc.  I would really like to lose weight and regain the muscle and strength that I used to have.  I realize this might take a year or two, which is really daunting  - but worth it.

My accomplishment - hitting a couple of Las Vegas buffets and filling up on lean meats and veggies before eating bread and desserts ;-)
My goal - to start logging food in my fitness pal.

Also daunting is that last time I was breastfeeding I couldn't lose weight. I'm really worried that this might be my fate again. :(  I guess I should also clarify that after a lifetime of under or over eating my maintenance caloric intake is usually around 800 - 1200 calories with consistent exercise.  While breastfeeding I don't think I can lower my calories sufficiently... Anyway hopefully I'll figure out a good balance.

QOTD: I like to treat myself to the hot-tub or something after working out to help motivate me to go on days when I would rather not.

I am determined to lose baby weight and committed to doing it quickly (albeit safely)! I don't know exactly how much I have to lose (I haven't weighed myself yet), but it is likely in the neighborhood of 60ish lbs. I would like to be back in my size 6 work clothes by sometime this fall, but I will have to see how realistic that is once I start losing weight.

I will say in the accomplishment department that I am proud of myself for not giving into temptation and eating junk while at the hospital for the last 6 days. I ate fruit and yogurt for breakfast, and mostly salads or steamed veggies for lunch and dinner. I was determined not to gain 10 lbs because we were at the hospital, and I'm pretty sure I successfully avoided that.

So my postpartum appointment with my OB is on Monday, and I will find out then how much I weigh. I consider that to be day 1 for serious dieting and exercising (assuming I am cleared for more rigorous exercise & can find time for it). I will get my act together because I want to be confident in myself again and set a good healthy example for my son!

QOTW: I haven't really relied on "tools" per se before. I am a pretty old school paper and pen kind of lady when it comes to food tracking. I am interested in what other people do though, because I can likely learn a lot! :)

  • Hi All! I'm on board, too. This week is all about getting back in the swing of things. I was losing weight before my vacation, gained about 10 and have since lost about 5 of that. I'm really tired of having tight clothes and nothing to wear. I need to lose about 15 pounds to be fitting in all my clothes. Why is this so hard for me? I've been trying to lose 15-20 for a year plus! QOTW: love apps on my iPhone. I'll reup my "myfitnesspal," too! Also love the 100 push-ups app and the C25k.

  • @crazyaunt84 I, too, was training for a half marathon when we started trying with my body for a baby.  I wish a doctor had been up front with me about the issues that arise from that kind of training.  My cycles went all wonky, and were really short.  Not to mention the core body temperature issue, as well as the mental part of things that makes you not want to run as hard, or you are worried you are going to mess things up.  I never really could "get in the zone".  I actually did a full 10K all out during a TWW...  I made a PR that day, but certainly didn't help my chances of conceiving.

When we moved to the Specialist, she was a bit shocked about the amount of training I had been doing (I think she was shocked about a LOT of them things that we had been told at the OBGYN practice.)  Anyways, it is good that your doctor was honest with you about this stuff.  If the original doctor had told me that I should either wait until after the Half Marathon to start trying, or not do the race, I would have been happy to make that decision.  Instead, we went on doing what we were doing, and that did not do us any favors.  It is certainly hard to stomache, especially when running is your usual stress release!  I feel you pain, but believe me, it is worth it :)

  • Oi! So disciplined with my exercise 10.5 weeks ago and well not so much pregnant. I have been really motivated the last 1.5 years basically by my weight loss and how I look! Health is good too : ) I probably don't belong on this thread right now because I just consumed a cup of fried rice and a quesadilla... Omg.
  • My running has become almost non existent sigh....have been trying with my 56 minutes of Jillian and keeping myself somewhat primed for firefighting.
  • And yes typically once a week I would indulge in WINE but not anymore : )
  • Oi, right now my mom and in-laws are visiting. My mother in law is a retired military cook, so she's been cooking as baking all kinds of things we normally do not eat. So staying on track is not working right now.

We do weight watchers. Which I love, but I find the summer is a really hard time to be good and not cheat.

  • I have a fitbit.  I like that it encourages me to walk more.  I try to get in the 10k steps a day that it suggests.  The downfall is that it is very sensitive and I will sometimes put it in sleep mode without realizing it.

  • @Amber&Reva .. My DW has a fitbit and loves it! It's a big compitition between her and a girl at work who gets more steps each week.
With her playing golf she has been getting way over 10,000 steps a day.
She also puts hers to sleep by clapping her hands or something like that.

I should get myself a fitbit.
