easy access nursing wear

I'm tired of wearing nursing camis every day and night, but haven't had much luck finding alternative clothing that provides easy access. I have a couple button-down shirts that work. I might be spazzy but I can't seem to nurse wearing shirts that pull up from the bottom or pull down from the top without opening all the way - they always get in baby's way. Am I missing some huge nursing wardrobe secrets that I'm just not aware of!? Or is everyone else just better coordinated? :)

I wear nursing camis under my shirts during the day. That way I can hike my shirt way up without showing skin.

  • I made nursing tanks that attach to my bras.  They are similar to the undercover mama ones.  It was super simple!  You start with a tight fitting tank, cut off all but a couple inches of the strap.  Hand sew into a little loop and loop over the plastic snap of the nursing bra.  Then I can wear my regular clothes with that underneath, so when I pull up my shirt my belly isn't exposed.

  • Can someone explain the purpose of undercover mama tanks? They look like tanks with no straps.... Could be my sleep deprived brain but I don't get it?
  • The tanks never gave me enough support. (good dor sleeping in though) I did pretty good with the cowl neck style nursing Ts as well as cross over style. I bought some used Gap brand ones. I agree with PP, the looser the shirt, the easier it is. The easiest overall was a regular large shirt, nursing bras and a nursing cover.

  • I had/have good luck with wearing regular camis (no built in bra) under a regular shirt, and then pulling up the regular shirt and pulling down the cami with my bra flap.

It gets easier, for sure, and you'll figure out what works for you.

I saw a tutorial on a DIY nursing tank on Pinterest (it's one where you snip the straps and make little loops so you can attach the tank directly to your nursing bra) that I may make next time.

I either a) wear a v-neck or scoop neck top that's easy to pull down or b) wear a shirt with a higher neckline and a tank underneath and pull up the top one. I can pretty much wear anything in my wardrobe at this point except dresses with higher necklines.

Yes, it's totally a pain! More annoying then maternity clothes because I so want to wear my regular summer clothes!! I wear lots of cardigans and button down shirts so I can just open them up to my nursing tank underneath. I also have a few tank summer dresses that I can pull the straps down on; though I use a blanket to cover up in public.

  • Don't you ladies get hot wearing a nursing tank under your shirt? The extra layer in the summertime sounds awful.
  • Google milk nursing wear also Isabella Oliver makes cute nursing clothes, expensive though. I have bought nursing dresses from both companies and I love them.

I've never had a problem with it. It's just a thin tank, I often wear one under my shirt even when not nursing.

    +1 to that!!

@SouthRNComfort - I ordered a bunch of tops from Milk -- thanks for the tip!
  • Im Lazy apparently. I just wear a nursing tank with a real nursing bra under it and a shrug over it. easy access - i hate the pulling my shirt up thing, drive me crazy - but you cant see the clips from the tank or bra with the shrug. But I live in tanks all summer long, even when not nursing. So its a pretty normal wardrobe for me. I am dreading fall and winter!

  • @MrsZ0811‌ I still wear nursing tanks in the winter- with a cardigan or boyfriend style sweater over it. Still provides easy access, but keeps me warm, too!

  • I saw an article years ago about the "art of layering" for breastfeeding moms. Helps get back into normal clothes. I actually think it was on YouTube. Sorry. I just remember it talked a output one layer to stay over your stomach and one to go up. No breastfeeding clothes needed.
I have these tiny people who follow me around and call me mom, they are cute, so I let them stay.
