How can I get DD to drink more water...or anything really.

DD's urine is super concentrated and always has been. But at the last DR appt, the Pedi said I should really try to get her to drink more.  She will maybe drink 16 oz of fluid a day.  Usually milk.  Sometimes watered down apple juice.  Sometimes water.  She doesn't seem to like water.  But she needs to drink it.  Especially because it is about 90 degrees here from 10am on everyday.  Any advice??  I tried getting her mini tevis cups like mine and using fun straws, but she literally just isn't thirsty.

Or what are other things  I can try to see if she would like to drink.  The pedi actually suggested gatorade...hmm

  • If it was at the point where my ped was worried I would definitely do like 1/4 juice in the water all the time if that got her to drink. Maybe make homemade popsicles that are juice and water mixed and frozen? Or let her make juice ice cubes that she can put in her water to make it fun? I think they sell fun shaped ice cube molds even.

  • Ohh popsicles are a good idea.  I can make them mostly water.  The issue with ice is that she only wants to chew it.  She could care less if it was in her drink.  I even tried a squirt of my strawberry watermelon MIO today (which I don't want to be giving her) and she wasn't even interested...

  • I'm not much help because DD easily drinks 3-4 glasses a day. But I would also suggest ice.
  • Does she like high water content fruits and veggies? Cucumbers, melons (especially watermelon), tomatoes, etc? DD wouldn't drink water last week when she had HFM, but she ate almost an entire watermelon in two days.
  • DD will drink tons of water if she gets to drink out of a big kid cup aka my big straw tumblers or an open cup or a bottle of water.

  • Fun ice cubes, big girl cups, straws?
  • When Reese was in the hospitalized-the doctors ALWAYS monitored her liquid intake. And even though she was on fluids, they wouldn't unhook the IVs until they felt comfortable with liquid intake.

They did count partial liquids: yogurt, oatmeal (made with milk/water), ice cream, milkshakes, jello, soup, ice pops, etc.

Maybe if she won't drink as much--give her more of a "partial liquid" option?

We do a lot of stonyfield organic smoothies. I hope it's helping. I will try some of the others you listed! Thanks!

  • Ds1 loves "bubble water". aka: sparkling water with essence. We get the liter bottles at trader Joe's. The orange is his favorite.
