Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding and weight loss question

I ended up having to have a c-section on June 17th because I had so little ambiotic fluid left. DS wasn't a premie, thankfully, and was 40w2d @ 9lbs 1oz. He's been EBF since then even with a scare of low glucose at the hospital, I refused to let them give him any formula. I was a little big going into pregnancy starting at 200lbs, ended at 235lbs when I weighed in at my last OB visit before being sent to L&D. While pregnant, I made sure to gain as little as possible and even stayed at 225 for about 3 months or so.

It is not even a month out and I am already down to 208lbs. I try my best to eat when I'm hungry, but more often than not DS starts crying if I leave him alone if he's not already asleep...so I end up holding off and feed him till he's out again. My question is...am I losing too much too quickly? I had a hard time losing weight before I got pregnant (I would lose it but then gain it right away if I stopped being meticulous, but never over 200).

I want to stay healthy for my son and make sure he has enough milk. Thanks all :)

Re: Breastfeeding and weight loss question

  • As others have said, as long as you eat when hungry and drink plenty of water you should be fine. Weight loss is a nice little perk of BF for sure! It should taper off soon and then around 3-6 months, many ladies report additional weight loss. Then your weight should stabilize after that, though many women say they lose more after they wean. I hope that's true because I still have more to lose. :-)

  • I think people adjust differently to breastfeeding.  I dropped weight pretty fast while nursing and I'm still nursing at 10 months and my weight is lower than it has been in years.  I've been eating way more than usual, even more than I did while I was pregnant.  As long as you're eating consistently and drinking plenty of fluids I would assume you're fine.  Enjoy it :)
  • As long as baby is happy, growing, and with the right number of wet and dirty diapers it's totally fine. I lost all 45 lbs I gained with my twins by 8 weeks PP. I didn't do any exercise beyond walking and breast feeding and I am now below my pre pregnancy weight. Weight just comes off differently for different people so just enjoy if it's easier than you thought it would be. I too had a hard time losing weight pre pregnancy so was quite surprised with how easily it came off. Just enjoy if baby is happy.
