December 2013 Moms

anya fell off bed

she naps on our bed and I had her in the middle. She NEVER rolls. I ran out to let the dog out and came in to her screaming.  She was on her back on the floor.  She calmed down after about 15 minutes but I feel awful. Is a dr. visit necessary? Please tell me I am not the only one who had this happen.

She has pillows on the sides but not in front or back...she slid backwards.

  • They say a fall of 3 ft or less is usually harmless. I would watch for any strange behavior or call your ped for a list of what to watch for.

  • I'm so sorry. I know how scary it is. It almost happened to me about a month ago and I caught her last second. Just keep and eye out and I would call your pedi and see what they say to do.
  • You're not alone! Our LO fell out of the swing even though she was strapped in - go figure. She also flipped herself off the couch this morning (over a large pillow on her lap) trying to chase a toy & landed on her back. I about had a heart attack, but she's fine so far!
  • I had DS in his swing, unbuckled, and he twisted out of it and fell on the hardwood floors. You are not alone. I agree with others. Watch for strange activity, eye movements, etc. Call pedi if you need peace of mind.
  • So sorry. : ( I think almost everyone has a MOTY moment...mine was a month ago while I was excitedly focusing the camera to get a quick photo of her sitting, and of course that same second she falls backwards and hits her head on the hardwood floor. I'd call the ped just to hear what he/she thinks.

  • Hadley did this in May. She's still breathing thank goodness! I cried longer than she did. I held her for days. Told her it was ok to hate me if her head had a weird bump forever or if she had a weird obsession with ducks like her dad. Turns out so far she's normal. I think you will be ok.
  • Lurker here but don't let anyone make you feel bad. All moms make mistakes. I've had it happens to me and I panicked and called 911. They were very kind and said he was fine. He got a bump but it went away after a couple days. No mommy is perfect. Just as soon as you think you've got the baby thing figured out, they are into new things. Here is some great info: https://www.babycenter.com/0_falls_397.bc Alos, I love your daughters name.
I have these tiny people who follow me around and call me mom, they are cute, so I let them stay.

Watch her for abnormal behavior. If she seems overly sleepy or can't follow your finger I would take her in. Moral of this story: do not leave a baby unattended on a bed without rails. Do you not have a crib or pnp?
we have a pnp but for some reason she hates being on her stomach in it. So for naps she naps on our bed. She is still sleeping in our room at night in the pnp

Happened to me too. Thankfully she fell onto the super soft dog bed. Cried just until I picked her up then forgot it happened. Totaly normal, no bumps or bruises. I couldn't believe it. Makes you feel so stupid, but it's nice to know you're not alone.

I hope she's doing okay! Babies are pretty resilient. DD1 fell off the bed and landed right on the top of her head at 3 mos. She's fine now at 14.5 yrs old. If it happens again you will want to call the pedi as soon as it happens so they can tell you what to watch for and so they put it in their notes.

  • DS1 rolled him off the bed last month. I was even in the room, just not quick enough. He was fine. Shit happens.

DS rolled off the couch when he was a few months old, hit my leg on the way down and landed on the hardwood. He had a big bump on his forehead so I called the ped. They said to ice it and keep an eye on him. Two years later and whenever I think of the sound of him hitting the floor it still makes me sick.

DD ended up on the floor the other day on DH's watch but we're not entirely sure if she rolled off the couch or DS picked her up and put her on the ground. Either way she was all smiles.

Don't feel bad OP! We're all human and make mistakes. Just keep an eye on her and call the ped if anything seems off.

What everyone else has said. Odd behavior. Persistent vomiting. Excessive drowsiness. It happens a lot. Don't fret or be too hard on yourself.
  • A few weeks ago I brought Olive into bed to eat and fell back asleep. I woke up to a loud thud and her screaming. She rolled off the bed and hit the hardwood floor face first. It was awful. I called the pedi and they just told me to keep an eye on her for any strange behavior. Don't feel bad, babies are very resilient!!

  • Yup happened to DH when DD was just one month old. Agree with pp, just watch her behavior over the next couple days, don't be afraid to call the pedi if you're unsure. Don't feel too bad. Its the first of many bumps and bruises, c'est la vie.

Thank you I feel better knowing I'm not alone.  I know it happens a lot. I fell off the changing table when I was 3 months old...my dad didn't strap me in and that's a high fall!

She seems okay..same old smiley girl!

  • My kiddo fell off the bed as well, I didnt worry too much just looked for head trama signs. Not eating, excessive sleepy, vomiting, and one pupil change. He had a drs appointment three days later and I mentioned it to her and he was fine. Just make sure you are either putting a ton of pillows around her, or just put her in her crib.
