Bedtimes?

I did a quick search and couldn't find anything, so my apologies if this has been brought up before!

What is your LO's bedtime? Right now, we start her night routine around 7 with a bath, snuggle, swaddle, bottle, then sleep. She's getting to bed around 9:30-10, with one MOTN feed that varies, though is typically around 3:30. She'll go back down for a few hours then be up around 7.

This schedule works for us now as DH and I are teachers and don't have to worry about getting to work in the morning. Eventually though, we will. I feel like 9:30-10 is way too late and I'd like to get her down earlier, just not sure what a good time is. I'd just like to get a good night routine and bedtime down before we head back to work. Thanks!

Re: Bedtimes?

  • I literally could have written this. In September the 9pm bedtime will be adjusted. The only difference is that we bathe around 6.

  • I generally put her down at after her 9/10 feeding. She will generally sleep until 6:00, eat, then go back down until 9/10. When she's older I will put her down earlier but I keep her up as much as I can right now so she continues to sleep good at night.

Omg, yes! This is pretty much what we've got going on. I guess I just feel like an earlier bedtime is the norm and is expected, so I should put her down earlier once school starts. It just sucks because it's working for us now, and I'd hate to mess with it.

  • Everyday is a crapshoot. I had a great thing going with bedtime routine starting about 7:30 and down at 9pm. MOTN feeding around 3am, up at 6/630, down at 7am and up again for the day at 8/830am.

Last night DS was out by 8:30pm, tonight he just went down at 6:45pm. Wait...I lied. He's now awake. Mer.

Oh I bet! I'm a SAHM so don't have to worry about it for awhile. But I'm thinking I will eventually shoot for her to sleep from 8-8. My husband gets home at 5:45 so feel like that's a good time so he gets some time with her. She's been sleeping (most nights) through the night since around 2 weeks so hoping she continues!
  • Our goal for when we go back is to have him sleeping from 10-6. I tried an earlier bedtime of 8 and he was waking in 2 hours to be fed. I think it's just his time. I've laid him in bed at 930 and he's just laid there waiting to fall asleep at 10. No fussing or crying, he just wasn't ready yet,

10 works for us too because on work nights we don't get home til 8. Eventually we may move it up, but it's working so why change because we think it "should" be earlier?

I've heard earlier bedtimes do help colicky babies though...

  • Jealous at some of the long stretches of sleep you're all getting. DD cluster feeds 6pm-9pm and usually falls asleep around 9.30pm. MOTN feeding are around 1am, 3am, 5am, 7am. Up for the day sometime around 8-9am.

At this age DD1 didn't go to sleep until 11pm. She slowly adjusted her bedtime earlier and by 9months old she was sleeping 8pm-8am with no MOTN feedings.

  • 8:00 pm-ish for us. DS1 goes to bed just before 8 and then we swaddle up DS2 after he goes to bed and put him down. This should work for us when we go back to work too, since this has always been our oldest son's bedtime as well.

  • My DD goes down in her room between 8:30 and 9:30pm and sleeps until 6am. I then bring her into bed with me and she sleeps until 8 or 9am and then we get up and I feed her. She's going a solid 12 hrs without feeding so I'm assuming she will get to the point where she is sleeping straight through for almost 12 hrs, right now it is 9 to 10 hrs.
  • @FlemDance‌ we were on a similar schedule as you (10/11pm bedtime) but these last few days put her down around 8pm. But then we did a 'dream feed' at 10:00pm (basically a MOTNish feed that is initiated by us rather than LO). Might be a good way to start transitioning to an earlier time that way yours still gets the last feed around the same time. It worked for us the last 2 night. LO went for a 7 hr stretch after the dream feed. I will probably keep doing this for a little while then slowly phase it out
  • I pretty much have the same routine as OP. Bath around 8:30/9 then feed and to bed by 10. He wakes at 3:30ish then around 6:30. I need to get him to bed sooner but I'm selfish and keep him up so we sleep at the same time.
  • Last night and tonight are the earliest she has gone to sleep (11 and 9). For a while it was 1-530 or 6) then back down until 9 or 10. Idk what's going on. We changed our routine a little she's having an earlier bath and we go for a walk at night too.

    It's a BOY

Exactly this! I hate when we are up and she is down for the night - I miss her!

  • We start bedtime routine around 6:30 with a bottle (pumped BM but will eventually do formula), then bath, pj's, and a story. She is in crib by 7:30. She sometimes fusses for 5-10 minutes and then falls asleep. Just in the last week she has slept all night until 6:30. For about a week prior to that she would go all night without eating, but would fuss at about 3am so I was getting her up to change her and put her back to bed. I then figured out she was just fussing to get herself back to sleep. So I let her just fuss. The first night was about 15 minutes, then 10 the next night, 5 the next and last night I didn't hear her at all. And I dont consider this CIO. There is a difference between crying and fussing. If she's crying, I get her because I know something is wrong.

Im not sure if it helped, but we've had this bedtime routine from the beginning, probably at the end of week 1. At that time she was waking every 3 hours but she always went into her crib or bassinet between 6 and 8 and was there for 12 hours (between night feeds) before we got her "up" for the day.

    Good luck!
  • He usually last eats around 7-7:30 and is asleep by 8-8:30ish.  He still wakes up twice at night though.  I wish he would sleep longer!

@KellyQ116‌ - Does your LO wake up for the dream feed or sleep through it? Do you try to wake LO? I tried this once and it was a disaster.... She woke up cranky and would not go back to sleep.
  • @giggler25‌ she pretty much sleeps through it or is super groggy. She was so asleep last night that I almost wanted to see how long she'd go if I skipped the dream feed. But I really want that long stretch of sleep to be when we are also sleeping so we get the most out it. It's funny bc she usually gives DH trouble taking a bottle from him but he gives her the bottle at the dream feed and she doesn't bat an eye.
  • She usually goes to bed after her last bottle which is between 8-9:30 pm. So she falls asleep anytime between 8:30-10. We haven't been doing much of a bedtime routine, she just falls asleep after she eats. Lately she has been sleeping through the night until 6-8 am. She is 11 weeks old, 12 weeks on Sunday.

  • Teacher here also. Bathe at 630 zonked by 7:30. Up around 2 and 530. If we can cut out the 2 am wake up I'm good for September!
  • Kids are in bed by 10 - 1030p most nights. DS2 will wake up between 430a and 930a, depending On how much he ate the night before or if his diaper is wet.
