On an eating strike?

DS will be 11 weeks tmrw. He is EBF. Last feeding was this morning at 10:20. He napped, I offered, he screamed. Tried again - half hour after. Again refused. Is currently sleeping again. 5 hours seems like a long time to go during the day to me. Thoughts?

Re: On an eating strike?

  • Could be a nursing strike, could be the beginning of a cold or such. As long as he's making wet and dirty diapers I'd just watch him and offer again when he/you wake him.

  • If it's a nursing strike (brought on by illness, reflux, separation, etc), here's what my book, The Nursing Mother's Companion says to do:

    - try a position change, or nurse in a quiet, dimly lit room

    - when baby refuses to nurse, pump to keep up supply. Offer the expressed milk in a cup, not a bottle

    - try to determine the cause of the strike. Consider having baby examined to rule out an ear infection or other phys problem. Check your milk supply: slow let-down? Baby swallowing less?

    - maintain frequent and close skin-to-skin contact without nursing. Offer the breast whenever baby is sleepy.

  • Well, after 9 hours he finally caved and ate. He has since fed once more. I have no explanation. I hope this was a one off and he is back to his normal self. Thanks for your responses. Your support is appreciated !! :)
  • Curious if you have had better luck today @Trimby2409‌ ?? My LO hit 11 weeks yesterday and is doing the EXACT same thing but is only refusing one side (the right). It's making me nervous because we leave for vacation this weekend...
  • Glad he's eating again :-)  I was going to suggest maybe using a nasal aspirator to relieve any nasal congestion.  Babies have to breathe through their noses when they nurse, and if they're stuffed up it can make them really not want to nurse.

Mine has been refusing the right today too! So frustrating and I get nervous about supply. When it latch her to that side, she whines, sucks a bit, pulls my breast, flails, and pops off. Curious, what does yours do?
