High Blood Pressure @ 28 Weeks

Good morning/afternoon ladies. I feel like I am always coming here asking questions. lol Although I guess that's what we are all here for.

Anyways had my monthly checkup today (I was 28 weeks yesterday). My blood pressure was a little high this morning - 142/70. They had me lay down on my left side for 10 minutes and checked it again and it was 140/70. Anyways It is high for me, as my pressure is always in the normal range. They did some blood work and sent me home with a jug to pee in for the next 24 hours to check for protein in my urine. Now obviously they want to check for pre eclampsia. Have any of you had high blood pressure and these tests and have it not turn out to be pre eclampsia? I am sort of freaking out a little. Thoughts of bed rest, issues with baby and more severe complications have me in a little bit of a panic. So, I thought I would reach out and see if there is any of you in the same boat or who have had pre eclampsia etc. Thanks in advance. Hope everyone is doing well.

:)

Re: High Blood Pressure @ 28 Weeks

  • I had pre-e during my first pregnancy. I was put on high blood pressure medicine sometime during the second trimester and did the 24 hour urine thing--about the same time in my pregnancy as you. I did a couple of more urine collections before I was put into the hospital at 34 weeks. I was closely monitored and delivered by c-section at 36 weeks. It's tough, but try to stay calm, and keep the baby in as long as it is safe for both of you. Preeclampsia is nothing to mess around with. My little guy was a little bit small, but he's now a very healthy, active almost three year old. Best of luck to you!

  • Thanks ladies. Finished my 24 hour urine collection this morning. I filled two jugs in 24 hours. lol At least I know my kidneys function properly. haha. Now I just wait for results from blood work and the urine. Fingers crossed. Wish I had a home blood pressure cuff. Curious where it's at today.
  • It might be a good idea to go ahead and get a home blood pressure machine. It's good to be able to check yourself if you develop a head ache, or feel funny. I knew before I got to my 34 week appointment (where the doc sent me directly to the hospital) that my blood pressure was bad. I woke up with a head ache and checked my BP, and it was really high.

  • Nurse from doc office called, urine results won't be in till prob Tuesday. But my blood work came back and she said my doctor was reassured by the numbers of everything. So that was some positive news today. Still feeling nervous but feeling a little more relaxed.

Still haven't recieved the results from the 24 urine test. They said they would be back yesterday so I am hoping the fact they haven't called yet is a good thing. If I don't hear from them by the end of the day today I will call in tomorrow to double check. I did have an ultrasound to check on babies growth this morning. All seemed to look good and she seemed happy as a clam in there.

I had the pharmacist at walgreens check my blood pressure over the weekend and it was back down to 125/82 so I am still hoping that high pressure on Thursday was just a weird spike for some random reason.

  • So a little update on this. All my tests came back normal. At my next appointment my blood pressure was still a little elevated but doctor wasn't concerned. Both times my pressure was high it was a new medical assistant and my husband and I are both convinced she used the wrong size cuff or didn't read it correctly. Fast forward to last week and a diff nurse took my pressure and it was normal at 120/70.

I called my doctor office this morning as I have been having a little bit of swelling. Now I know swelling is somewhat normal at this point in pregnancy (i am 33 weeks). My feet and ankles have been a little angry with the hot weather we have been having. But once I put them up they are better. However my legs, specifically my shins have seemed swollen just over the last couple of days. I can actually make indents along where my shin bone should be. lol Anyways because of my previously high blood pressure at that appointment I have to go in today for a blood pressure check and a urine sample. Ugh, Fingers crossed.
