Progesterone Level

I had my progesterone checked today, 7DPIUI / CD20.

The doctor left a message saying that it looked good and that it is ovulatory at 7.4.

BUT... Dr. Google tells me that this seems pretty low. Do you think I should call and question this? Or trust that she said it was good and relax?

Re: Progesterone Level

  • I'd call for clarification, that is low. You may have ovulated but I that would would be weak.

  • My RE says over 15 for ovulation. I would call to double check.

    My History:
    Lots of BFN's & failed IUI's w/clomid and/or femara
Finally BFP with femara & t.i.- son born 6/17/2010
Started TTC again around when DS was 3ish
    Lots of BFN's with femara & t.i & ovidrel
Tubes clear, S.A came back low motility but high count
About to switch to injectables w/femara, did one last cycle with just femara & an IUI with ovidrel- stupid motility was fantastic in the sample, but count was 700,000 AFTER wash! Had to sign a paper to even still do IUI- BFFP (big fat freaking positive) Go figure!

  • I think 15 is for medicated cycles?

I was medicated, cd 3-7 on letrozole, no trigger. :-(

Is usual protocol to consider it a bust, or should I question the need for extra progesterone?

I wonder why she was so cheery and saying it was fine...

  • That does seem low, but I don't think you should consider it a bust yet, you're only 7dpo, if implantation occurs, it will go up to support the pregnancy. Do you typically have a short LP? You can bring up your concerns that it's on the low side and see what they say, but typically if your LP is 11-14 days your progesterone should be fine.

  • Thanks for the encouragement. I will give them a call tomorrow. There have been cycles where my LP is on the short side, but most has been fine or borderline, two cycles ago it was 10dpo but last cycle it was 14.

I spoke to my RE's office. She said that while they like to see something around 10 on a cycle like mine, they have seen pregnancy at my level (7.4) and they have seen BFNs at 30-40+. I did O, as she said textbook is over 3. I also found out my RE is not one to give progesterone supplements in my case, when I asked about that. He doesn't like to "support" a "bad pregnancy" that my body would not otherwise support and that my progesterone will naturally rise to support it if it's supposed to stick.

So we wait :-) And if this cycle doesn't work her guess is that he will want to increase my letrozole next cycle for a stronger O.

Thanks for all of your input, I'm glad I called to get more informed.

  • Thanks for the update, glad you got some answers.

Interesting theory on the progesterone supplements.

  • I am confused about the progesterone part. From what I understand, progesterone is needed to support a pregnancy. If you don't produce it on your own (enough), they give you supplements. My levels were always low, so that is why I was put on capsules.

    Am I wrong on this?!

Well hers was just on the low side at 7dpo which is before implantation would even occur, theoretically if your LP is over 10 days, your body should produce enough to support a pregnancy, because it's holding your lining long enough for implantation to occur- Once implantation occurs, the progesterone goes up naturally.

  • From what I understand that she was telling me, is that I don't think my reading alone proves I didn't/won't produce enough progesterone. In my initial RE bloodwork my progesterone was normal. She said the 7.4 was not high but it's not terribly low. It went up showing I ovulated, so my RE does not supplement prog, at least not "just in case" I guess, because he's confident mine would raise accordingly to support a solid pregnancy and at 7 DPIUI I could still be implanting/raising, right? If it saves me what would likely end in early miscarriage and CP's I'm all for it; however, I obviously want to make sure I produce enough.

I like that he doesn't jump the gun on hormones, but if this sounds fishy to the board I will press. Again, this is my first rodeo with treatment and I think we are seeing what works.
