Breech Baby

I had my weekly appointment yesterday and the doctor discovered that my baby was breech. She said there are two options...
1. Do nothing and plan on a C-Section. Before the C-Section will be done, another ultrasound will be given to see if she didn't flip on her own
2. Try and manually flip her next week. This option could cause early labor but I would be 38 weeks at that point

Any suggestions/ anyone who had this done

Re: Breech Baby

  • I hesitate to even share this b/c it is such a very personal decision and every situation is different, but here goes. My friend's baby was frank breech, and they tried an external version with her at 36 weeks (b/c she was already 3 cm dilated and in preterm labor). The baby didn't turn, and she went into labor the very next day, resulting in a c-section. Now normally I am the kind of person who would personally choose to try the version in an effort to flip the baby, but my friend said it was absolutely the most painful thing she has ever experienced -- even more painful than med-free vaginal birth when she had a 4th degree tear. She was very frustrated to have gone through that and still wind up with a c-section, but thankfully she and the baby are now finally both at home and doing well.

  • No experience what so ever, but I do see a lot of people saying to try spinningbabies.com

  • I have a frank breech baby myself im 38w 2d today. He's been head down about 4 times but kept flipping back. ive tried all the spinningbabies stuff and had no luck. I was offered the version but between the risks and the horror stories of how painful it was for only a 60% chance it would work and that he could flip back to breech even if it did work i opted out. I really had my heart set on a med free vaginal birth so i was really bummed, but today is the day i actually schedule my c section for next week and even though i'm nervous for it, having time to realize this is the way it will be and have been able to research i'm also excited to know when i can finally meet my little man.

This. I've heard an adjustment by a Webster Technique certified chiropractor often works for people and is less painful/uncomfortable than an external version.
  • Also, totally as an aside, MH couldn't understand why the doctors didn't just strap my friend to a table and invert her so her feet were over her head. Surely that would make the baby swim around into a better position, right? I kept trying to explain that it's not like the baby is just floating in a bubble, which led to him observing how skinny my friend is so it made sense that she wouldn't have as much room for her baby to move as I do. Can you say "stink eye," ladies??

This.  DS1 flipped at almost 38 weeks at the chiropractor (search for webster technique on youtube...it's not scary, no cracking, just massaging ligaments).  I did this a few days after myversion, which unfortunately was unsuccessful and quite painful.  If I were ever in the situation again, I would try the chiro first and then the version again if he didn't flip.  The risks associated with ECV are lower, statistically, than those of C-section, so I would always give it a shot.

  • Agree with PPs to look for a Webster certified chiropractor. I have been seeing one since about 32 weeks and she is amazing. Although I have not needed to have baby flipped, she has helped with pain and it is also helpful for an easier delivery. Good luck!
