the V word

vaginas??  pssshhhh!!  no.  i'm talking about vasectomies.

my husband is having one on friday.  i realize i'm probably not going to get a lot of responses here since we all just had our babies and many/most of you are going to have more babies down the road... but...  what was recovery like for your husband/partner??  anything i should be aware of?

Re: the V word

  • I work with mostly men, and a LOT of them have had vasectomies (and are very open about it, lol).  Most have recovered just fine.  Most have been back to work (flying high-performance aircraft) in a few days.   Only one had any kind of complications, and I'm not sure what the issue was (he wasn't so open about that, not that I blame him), but it was resolved and he's fine now.

  • My husband is having one as soon as we can get it scheduled! I have heard the recovery is quite easy.

  • I'm trying to convince DH to get it done. He wants a son, I told him he doesn't have one in him. Literally.
I knew someone who had six children because she kept trying until she had her girl. My grandmother-in-law also had five children all of the same sex. Out of curiosity, what would he do if you had a third girl? Would he want to try again?

To borrow a phrase from Rachel Green....

    "That's a risky little game"

    Adopt a boy, maybe??

  • What I'd like to know is how you convinced DH to get one. .. still working on this.
  • DH had one about a month after DS was born. Honestly it was a harder recovery then he expected. Make sure he gets a (tight) jock strap to keep everything in place and wears it a good solid week. Including sleep. any time DH left his off for a few hours he paid for it. DH also had an undescended testicle as a kid though that had to be surgically pulled down. This side was the one that gave him the most pain post V so that may have complicated his recovery. Plus there's always whiney man syndrome to consider. I pushed a baby out and recovered quicker

  • DH had one when DS was 6 weeks he had it Friday morning and was back to work by Monday. He laid around all weekend with frozen peas and good pain meds. I will admit I did eyeroll quite a bit. He did not wear anything special but did prefer boxer briefs over boxers. It really wasn't too bad.
  • DH's old insurance was supposed to have paid for his consultation and due to paper shuffling errors is still not paid for.. As soon as we get the insurance company to cut a damn check when it should have been covered, we are making an appt for him.

DH claims he's smarter than my dad and we'd stop at 3 girls.
  • Just weighing in on the fact some men are so protective of their junk and so scared of it, yet think of of the stuff that happens to our vaginas! We really are amazing!

They are such over dramatic babies!!
DH won't have to get one since I'll have repeat sections, we'll just tie mine since it's easier with them already being I there!

I have one friend who gave me the post game in the big V. His recommended recovery supplies: frozen peas and a remote control. Do it during March madness or some good tourniment depending on H's interests.

I didn't have to sell it to my H, but pointed out that having tubes tied is a harder surgery and leaves the risk of a tubal pregnancy. Being on hormonal BC for life is a PITA. A V is an outpatient with low risk.

Also, if something awful happened to me, H still doesn't want more kids. If something awful happened to him, I might have another if I remarried.

  • H had one about 6 weeks ago. In second the comment about a jock. He wore his for like 2 weeks. He said that dangling was te worst part. He used peas for like 3 days. He didn't even use the pain meds just Tylenol and ibuprofen. He waaaay over did it the next day and paid for it in pain a couple days later. So really have him lay around the day of and next. But totally worth it.

My mom is one of 7 girls, no boys. Definitely a risky little game haha.
  • My DH is getting one after we move and finances get back stable. Until then I have the IUD
  • Will insurance cover a vasectomy?

I feel weird about either of us getting sterilized... In definitely not ready to even think about not being able to make a baby! Although the vasectomy is the way wed go I think
  • We both don't want any more kids, so it had been decided awhile ago. I'm just hoping I don't roll my eyes too hard as he languishes around the house all weekend long with peas on his crotch. Wouldn't it be great if I could have done nothing but nap, lay on the couch and ice my vag after delivery?!

Good to know re: the jock strap! Thanks!

My DH is waiting for his referal, he will be going soon. We have heard mixed stories with regards to recovery. I have already warned him that he better suck it up and not be a baby because there is no way it compares to labor and recovery and like you said, I didn't get to lay around and "heal"
  • we will most definitely be careful until he is cleared after his sample!

(what i really wanted to say was "until he blows a zero"... ha!)
