Pregnant after IF

Questions for you ladies

Hello!  I'm lurking over from IF/3T, b/c I have some Q's you may be able to answer quicker.  What have your doctors said about long distance travel in your first trimester?  Is it better to wait and travel in your 2nd, or does it not matter too much, as long as you just get up and walk around every hour or two?  How long did you keep taking PIO (for you IVF ladies) after your first positive beta?

I have to do some traveling by the end of the year, and I'll have to book in the next 2 weeks, which is before we find out if this upcoming IVF round works.  If it doesn't, we'll take a break regardless until early next year, and I'll have time to travel without worry.  But I just don't want to book it too soon or too late, if I'm lucky enough to get a BFP out of this cycle.

Me 33, DH 37 -- TTC since Jan'12 -- Low AMH (0.78) & endo, SA w/ low motility
IUI's 1-3 = BFN, IVF converted to IUI 4/13 = BFN
IVF 1.2: 8R 6M 4F -- 2 blastocysts frozen, FET 8/15 = BFP!!
Beta #s = 445;1,098; 9,545  -- EDD 5/2 -- Team Pink!
Camila Josephine arrived 4/30 :)

Re: Questions for you ladies

  • I didn't have any travel restrictions that I know of.  I know there are people on this board who traveled pretty early on in their pregnancies without any problems.  I don't think most doctors start to restrict your travel until your third trimester or if you are having complications.

GOOD LUCK!  I hope this is it for you!

  • No doctor told me not to travel but I will say that I felt like crap. I would have been miserable traveling with the food aversions/ morning sickness. That would be my concern with travel in first tri. You never know how you will feel. Some people are fine and some are miserable....

  • My RE does say no air travel in the first trimester, but he is extremely cautious. I don't think there is any risk to the baby. I agree with Mrs.McIrish - you never know how you are going to feel. I am on PIO until 11 weeks.

Good luck with your next cycle!

  • I had no travel restrictions in first tri and traveled cross-country by plane around 7 weeks. I will say it was not fun - I was having all kinds of GI issues and being stuck on long flights was tough. We just packed the PIO - I think I kept the oil with me and put the syringes and stuff in my checked luggage. I think I was on PIO until about 12 weeks pregnant. FWIW, my RE didn't check my progesterone levels or anything he just stopped PIO on a certain day. Good luck!!!

I didn't have any restrictions in 1st tri and flew round trip from MD to Puerto Rico around 8 or 9 weeks without issue. I did have some nausea and food aversions so wasn't able to enjoy the food there, but otherwise it was fine!

    Oct 12 - Jan 14: 3 clomid/TI cycles, 2 hysteroscopies, 2 IUIs, 1 BFP (MMC @ 12w), 2 more IUIs
    Feb 14: Gonal-f + IUI #5 = BFP! (EDD 11/4/14)
    Baby boy arrived 11/13/14!

  • I'm leaving tomorrow at 8 weeks to fly east coast to Alaska, I booked the trip months ago and honestly didn't think the IUIs were going to work, ummm surprise! Time wise it worked perfectly, the first few weeks after BFP I still had appointments for bloodwork and ultrasounds and my RE had to push up my "graduation" a week since I'll be gone...so I'd try to be round at least 4 weeks after BFP for monitoring. As soon as I got my BFP I asked if it was ok to travel and no one expressed any concern, just reminded me to take it easy. I was most nervous about not feeling well but so far I haven't had any really bad m/s. I was also nervous about how it would play out if something went wrong with the pregnancy, so far I've just worried for nothing. I have no advice about PIO. Good luck to you! :)

  • I has no travel restrictions either. But I did go in for u/s at 7, 8 and 10wks with my RE. I possibly had a 3rd sac so they wanted to keep an eye on it. No PIO for me, so no help there.

I will say I was not feeling well most of first tri. As a precaution I did have my RE prescribe me Zofran (anti-nausea) just in case I needed it. I didn't end up using it too much, but def take a stool softener with it as it backs you up.

  • I didn't have any travel restrictions. I traveled to Mexico (2.5 hours), Paris (10.5 hours) and Munich (13.5 hours) during the first trimester. They suggested on the int'l trips that I get up a move around every few hours and drink lots of water. The Mexico and Paris flights were misery because of the m/s.

I was on PIO for 5 days before transfer and didn't get to stop taking it till I as 11w6d. Giving myself the shots on the int'l trips was no fun, especially the times I had to do it on the plane.

    Hi,

No travel restrictions, so we booked a cruise and of course 2 days before my cruise I started bleeding and passing clots on a Thursday night.  Went in for emergency visit Friday morning (beta drawn), US in afternoon around 2pm....needed repeat beta on Sunday but we were leaving for Miami on Saturday.  So got home around 3pm on Friday and had 2 hours to frantically call IVF places in Miami (before they probably closed at 5pm if not earlier) that would take an out of state pt on a Sunday.....had to rent a car last minute etc, doctors were unhappy I was going on vacation.  I was scared but wasn't going to back out on the vacation, didn't buy travel insurance.  They were afraid I was going to miscarry and be out at sea without a hospital or sub par hospital at one of the islands.  Luckily we found an IVF place after several rejections, my doctors were able to call me and talk me through precautions Sunday before getting on boat.  I was a nervous wreck all week and got an US the day we returned.  Luckily everything turned out ok but lessons learned were:

    1) Travel in country, so you can find another IVF clinic or good hospital to go to if needed
    2) Buy travel insurance if you can, if we had it, we probably would have cancelled so we could be monitored like the RE wanted (thank goodness it all worked out, but it could have easily went other way).
    3) We traveled very early on in first tri - like between 5-6 weeks, next time I'll wait longer until things are more established after the BFP and you know things are going well.  Probably between 9 and 12 weeks would have been better for us.  Many of us IVF ladies on here have had bleeding scares early on.  Not sure if it's all the meds we are on or what.
    4) If booking 2nd trimester, I wouldn't book anything past viable day, as a nurse that works with preemies, I have had out of state families who delivered early on during vacation and that adds a whole new level of stress besides being hospitalized, away from family, with nothing but what is in their suitcases for weeks.

Hope this helps!!!!  But I'd definitely would book a vacation again, we had a ton of fun (even though I was nervous).  My bleeding did stop and I went ahead and did snorkeling and stuff, but took it easy.  Just next time, I'd definitely stay state side as the biggest thing, want to be in a place with good medical care if needed.

Oh and your other question, I was a fresh transfer, so was just on PIO during 2WW, then switched to prometrium vaginally 3x a day and estrogen orally 3 times a day, which was  good for travel.  Didn't have to worry about shots or traveling with it.  I stayed on prometrium until 10 weeks preggo.
