Breastfeeding

cold medicine recommendation

I am still bf my 18 month old, and so far I've been able to avoid getting really sick. I currently have a pretty bad cold with (tmi) lots of mucus. I'm wanting to take some over the counter medicine to help with the cough, but I'm afraid I may choose the wrong one and cause myself to dry up before my son is ready to wean.

Thanks in advance

Re: cold medicine recommendation

  • just avoid anything with sudafed (pseudoephedrine) or a decongestant, as that is what can dry up your supply.

you can take expectorant like mucinex, or robitussin (the kind w/o decongestant), or nasal sprays like afrin.

  • Also DEFINITELY try saline spray and/or a neti pot. It'll help (literally) wash out your sinuses, and I find that I get over the cold faster/have less severe symptoms when I use saline a few times per day.

  • You have some great advice here.  I have allergies and use saline spray on a daily basis.  My health care provider also suggested putting vapor rub on a wash cloth, placing it on the floor of the shower and letting the hot shower spray hit it. Turns the shower into a medicated vaporizer.  Just be careful because it can make the floor of the shower really slippery.

Awesome advice! Thank you all. I got some mucinex and am going to try some of the other suggestions made on here. I know about kellymom I just seem to forget about it when I have questions. Lol. Thanks again!
