taking god out of the inaugaration speech

Who agrees?Disagrees? I personally don't understand why an atheist should give a sh*t at all. You're an atheist! If you don't believe in god, who cares who does? I like that our country has christian overtones. It just seems right.

  • I don't get why they care either.

  • um...WOW!  too bad some people don't know our country was founded on christian beliefs...
  • Let me preface what will probably be an unpopular opinion by saying, I really don't care - it doesn't bother me.  HOWEVER - our government mandates separation of church and state.  Therefore, it's odd to have government sworn in the authority of an entity it cannot legally recognize based on that very separation.

Being in the religious minority, sometimes the assumption that we're all living out of the Bible can be annoying.  But, like I said, it doesn't bother me that much either way.

Conversely, how would you feel if I was becoming president, and chose to be sworn in by a high priestess, over a book of shadows, or if Obama was truly Muslim, and chose to be sworn in over the Koran?

  • People are always going to be upset about something.  I worked at a Christmas Tree stand a few years back and I remember a guy coming in and asking if we carried Hannukah bushes.  I think everyone wants to feel included, or they want everyone to feel excluded.
  • I think it's weird.  God, as one name or another, is a part of many religions, not just Christianity.  Atheism is just one group of people.  It's a democracy, and generally majority rules.  To me, that's like going to a foreign country and being mad that everyone didn't speak English.

You make a very excellent point! Well said.

I would actually have no problem with you being sworn in by a high priestess. I'd prefer to have a president that believes they have a higher power to answer to.

Really?  Because I think our country would go apesh!t if anybody was sworn in over anything other than a Bible.  In fact, I doubt that at this point anybody from a religious minority could win the presidency.  Hell, look at all the hubub over a mormon candidate!

Personally, I always thought the person swearing in should be sworn in according to their own beliefs.  So if you were president, I would be  very disappointed if you weren't sworn in by a high priestess.  To me, the whole point of swearing in under a religious pretense is because most people put their faith before their country.  If you swear by your faith to do what's right I would think you'd be more inclined to keep your word.  I don't know if that's the actual reason but hey... And if an atheist became president, then I would expect there be no religious references.

But I don't really care either way either.  Not until I'm president anyway...

You're probably right but keep in mind there are plenty of individuals who wouldn't care because individuals can be intelligent and think for themselves. People as a whole, not so much.
