Breastfeeding

How much is he eating?

I'm trying to figure out how much milk my baby is getting during a breastfeeding session. He is a month kid and when giving a bottle for a feeding we give him 3oz. But after that feeding he's usually hungry sooner than he is after a bf session. When I pump I get a lot of milk (like 10oz in a 15 minute pump!) and they says babies are more efficient at extracting milk than a pump...

Re: How much is he eating?

  • The best way to really figure it out is to do a weighted feeding. If you have a doctor's appointment soon or work with an LC you can weigh-nurse-weigh and figure out how much he is transferring.

All the other ideas (looking at how much you pump and how much he takes from a bottle) are just estimates. Even with a weighted feed, you don't quite have a full picture since milk intake varies by the feeding.

  • He'll often go 3 hours between feedings, and sometimes I have to wake him for those, but after a bottle hits more like 2 hours. I only pump once a day in the morning when I feel engorged.
  • He gets a bottle like once a day so that my husband can feed him and I can he a break (usually at the same time that I'm pumping) or in case I'm out and he's hungry. I'm going back to work in about 6 weeks so I'm also trying to build up a stash.
