Twins on public transit?

First of all, hello to all you MoMs out there! Been MIA since my twins were born 10 weeks early last August. They are 10 months old now!

A lot has happened! I have a page on FB called Prayers for Sweet Dominic (Facebook.com/Prayers4Dominic), if you'd like to catch up on everything going on.

I'm going to be headed to Boston with the twins for 6-8 weeks. I am totally new to big cities and navigating public transit with twins. I have a front and back style triple stroller, Joovy Big Caboose, and it sucks! Really big, heavy and hard to steer, not to mention uncomfortable for the little guys. I'm planning on borrowing my friends side by side double jogging stroller. It's super easy to maneuver and very comfy for the babies. I figure worse case, we will just walk long distances. But what if we need to take the bus or train?

Also, I'm for sure taking one infant car seat on the flight. Should I take both? I'm going to have a TON of stuff to drag along. 2 rock n plays, clothing and gear and medical equipment and supplies to last 2 months! Alone! In Boston!

To say I'm freaking out is an understatement. Help!

Re: Twins on public transit?

  • I read your blog and will definitely be praying for Dominick.  I hope your time in Boston is so helpful to him.
I can't speak to Boston, but in Germany a double stroller on trains is easy peasy.  I just stand w/ my stroller where I enter the train on short rides.  On longer rides, there are stroller trains where the first section of seats have only 1 seat wide.  Although my SBS stroller hogs up the aisle, people can still get by, but often head the other direction when they see me.  I have yet to brave the buses b/c there is a language barrier; however, my german babysitter took the girls on the bus and had no issues.  I am sure you will have lots of help if the bus is the way to go.
As for your flight, I am guessing you have 3 seats if you're considering taking both carseats?  Can someone go to the airport with you?  Or how are you getting picked up?  If you can take them, that would be awesome for the flight, but that's a lot of stuff!  I flew back from the US w/ my girls by myself when they were 14 months and didn't take carseats b/c I couldn't do it logistically w/ a layover.  Hope someone else will chime in w/ help on that option!  What I did do, was wore one on the front, pushed an umbrella stroller and wore a back pack...
Again, good luck and hope Dominick respond well!!

  • Ha! I've never attempted public transit with my two and we live in the Boston area (I'm the one who offered to help with childcare, etc on FB). I'm sure it's doable, but I've been too spoiled by my car to give it a try. Thankfully, the weather should be nice while you are here, so if you need to walk, it's ok. Some T stops are not wheelchair/stroller accessible, so definitely check the maps for where you are going! Do you have lodging figured out yet?

  • Not yet. :( I've got a room reserved at the Holiday Inn Express on Boston St but I cannot afford to stay there long. It's $100 per night, which is a huge discount but would exhaust the funds too quickly. Still waiting to hear back on hospitality homes. Blah.

  • I forget what happened with Ronald McDonald House... I wish we had space for y'all, but we barely have space for us! 3 more days, right?! Even if you don't need anything, I'd love to meet you all.
