What is the meaning of your baby's name?

What is the meaning of your baby's name? What does it mean to you, or why did you choose it?

My DS1's name is Nikolas Knight. His father picked the name, and had it in mind well before we conceived. I fell in love with it! We decided to spell it with a 'k' instead of a 'ch'. I love how unique his middle name is, and I am particularly fond of anything and everything renaissance and medieval. My DS1 tells everyone "I am a Knight!" especially when we visit the annual Renaissance Festival.

The meaning of his first name, according to https://www.thinkbabynames.com/:

Nikolas as a boy's name has the meaning "people of victory" and is a variant of Nicholas (Greek), biblical: one of seven "qualified men" in the first-century Christian congregation.

I choose DS2's name, Nolan Lawrence. Nolan has obvious ties to baseball, which H used to play throughout his childhood and into his adult years. He was offered scholarships but he severely injured his left leg and his knee before starting college. It was one of the very few names H immediately took to (he is picky). Lawrence is my father's middle name, and LO was due on my dad's birthday to boot.

Here is the meaning of his first name:

Nolan \n(o)-lan\ as a boy's name (also used as girl's name Nolan), is pronounced NOH-lan. It is of Irish and Gaelic origin, and the meaning of Nolan is "champion". From Nuallan. Also possibly from Uallach (Gaelic) "proud one". Surname used as given name. Baseball celebrity Nolan Ryan.

What about your LO's name(s)? Any interesting stories behind them, please share. :)

Re: What is the meaning of your baby's name?

  • We picked the name Logan because it was the one name both DH and I agreed on. We each had unlimited veto power, and this was pretty much the only name that made the cut. His middle name is Robert, which was my grandfathers name, and my dad's middle name.

  • Our LO's name is Wyatt John-Philip.

Wyatt because that's the only name MH liked. He shot down every other name I liked.

John is after my grandfather who passed away. I lived with him for about 5yrs of my life we got to become close.

Philip is after MH's grandfather who passed away.

Our son is Finley Kyle. DH's grandfather was adopted when he was 3 which meant his last name changed. Our last name now is super common and DH doesn't have a blood connection to the name. DH's grandfathers last name was Finley before he was adopted. We thought it would be a nice way to honor his grandfather (who passed several years ago)and the blood line. Kyle is DHs name. We couldn't agree on a middle name and didn't want it to be random. DH wasn't sure about it but I insisted I wanted him named after the best man I have ever known.
Love the meaning behind that. I think family names are awesome. :)

Our son is Rowan Gene - name means "red" but chose because we liked it and not the meaning of it...thought it was different but not too weird and a strong name. Gene is a family name on my hubby's side (his grandfathers name and DH and his Dad both have the middle name Gene as well).

Our daughter is Maren Bonita. Most sites say "there is much debate over the meaning of the name". Ranging from "mistress of the sea" and "sea of bitterness or sorrow" to "wished for child" - so obviously we lean towards thinking it means the positive:) again, it was chosen based on liking how it sounds versus the meaning. Bonita is my beloved, awesome grandmother's name. I also love that it means "beautiful" in Spanish. I have learned Maren is pronounced and spelled a couple different ways...we pronounce mare-in like Erin with an m in front.

  • We picked Mary after waiting two hours after the anatomy scan to see the OB. We were running through tv characters' names and got to Mary when discussing Downton Abbey. We liked that it was a classic name that isn't so common anymore. Mae is the first name of one of his grandmothers and the middle name of the other-- we had always planned on that middle name. This past weekend we went to Alabama (1200 miles total, insane trip), and she met her great grandmothers. Mae Bell cried when she first held her, it was such a beautiful moment.

Funny, we picked Logan for the same reason! DS's middle name is Martin
It was my grandfather's middle name.

  • Ethan James

Ethan means solid strong and enduring.
James was mentioned by a pp.

We really loved the names first and once I looked up the meaning of Ethan I loved it even more. DH and I are really into traditional names and thought that the meaning was perfect for out little boy!
Aparently so do a lot of other people haha oh well. I survived being one of a million Danielles born my year just fine ;-)
  • Cooper James Roger

I've always loved the name Cooper -(it's even the name of my "secret"board on Pinterest with all things baby - even before we ttc)
The trick was convincing DH but Cooper means barrel maker - as in barrels that whiskey is made in and that sold DH

James Roger are DHs middle names.
James is his grandfather who passed away this spring and Roger is his godfather
And I like the way they sound together.
DHs nick name is Rog so I'm happy my son gets to carry on those names

With our next baby I think we need to pull names from my side of the family tho to even it up
  • DS2 is Lucas William.

Lucas is the male version of my first name (that I don't go by) Lucy, and Lucy was my maternal grandmother's name, she died before I was born. I have always loved the name Lucas anyway and DH loved it as well. It worked out that it kind of ends up being a family name as well. It means "light".

William is my dad's middle name and also my paternal grandfather's middle name, I was very close to my grandpa and also my dad so this was a way to remember my grandpa and honor my dad.

With naming our kids we try to pick one family name and then one "we just like it" name.

  • We have Brooke Olivia.

Husband loved Brooke and I fell in love w it for that reason. I also love the ties to nature as she was born on a gorgeous day in may.

Olivia because we thought it sounded pretty with Brooke and it would make her initials BOO which we think is adorable!

  • We didn't choose our baby's name based on the meaning. His name is Dexter James. We chose Dexter just bc we really love the name. Yes, we sorta got the idea from the tv show. We were watching it one day a few years ago and I said, "Dexter is a cool name. We should use it if we ever have a boy." And MH agreed. I also like it bc MH's name is Alex, so I liked that Dexter had an "x" in it, but it's not a super weird/trendy name like some x names can be. We chose James for a middle name bc it my dad's middle name, and he was named after my great uncle who was a fighter pilot and was shot down in WW2.

    Seamus Roderick

H's name is Sean, was nearly Seamus. It is the Gaelic equivalent of "James" and means "he who supplants". We liked that continuity, the nod to Irish roots, and the nickname Shea.

Roderick was my grandfather's name. We were very close. DS was born on the obe year anniversary of his passing. It was used by the English/Scotts and means "famous power".

It actually hadn't occurred to me that we were giving him such powerful names - we just liked them and wanted to draw from that family history.

DS is Caden. It was the first name in the name book DH read and we both liked the sound of it. I got over it being part of the -aden craze after I realized we weren't going to agree on anything else and we did both like it.

Leo is the middle name. We both have an uncle and grandpa named Leonard. DD's middle name is Eve, short for my grandma Evelyn, so a shortened Leo seemed fitting. And Leo Tolstoy :)

  • We agreed to choose Marathi names for her - that's dh's mother language, from the region of India around Mumbai. So then we were looking for names that I thought were pronouncable and didn't have any syllables that sounded like something dirty in English and that had meanings we liked (mostly what we agreed on was nature -related or certain Hindu goddesses) . Also dh said it couldn't be a name one of his relatives already had or that he knew people with that name - since there are so many names he didn't want one that's too common. That still left a lot of names and we didn't settle on it until the day before she was born! Though i was pretty sure which name I wanted a couple weeks before.

Her first name means 'after the rain' which I picked from the ones we both liked well enough. I like it because she is a rainbow baby for us and in addition the year and a half before she was born was also difficult as my mother was sick/in treatment/dying from lung cancer. She died 4 days after A. was born. And dh's father had died 2 years ago. So both families were grateful to have a new life as something happy to focus on after times of sadness. And then also there's the nice way things outside smell after it rains. And after rain things thrive and grow like we hope she will. And in Mumbai the monsoon rains bring relief from really hot weather and dh likes the weather there just after it rains. So many reasons for liking that name.

Her middle name is the name of a hindu goddess of food/grain who is known for being generous and giving people plenty. Also it just sounds nice as a name. Dh really picked that one.

I never put the actual names here b/c don't want bump pages to show up if someone googles her name since it is unusual enough to not give a lot of search results. If you're curious the first name at least shows up easily by Googling Marathi name after the rain. Both names start with A.

  • I liked Scarlett. Mh jumped on board finally after we both felt like she just wasn't an Isabel anymore (when we found out she was a she). Vaux is french and began from what I believe around king Henry viii. Who was super hot I'm the tudurs btw. It's actually a boy name and we just liked the way it flowed. Sounded powerful to us. It's pronounced v-oh Fyi a lot of people pronounce it wrong:(

    It's a BOY

We always knew we wanted to use Biblical names for our kids. When DS1 was born we decided to use Ezekiel because it was not so youneek, but still wasn't going to be super common either. And we both really liked the meaning of the name, which is Strength of God. So when we found out that we were having another boy we figured we needed another name that went with Ezekiel! :)  We picked Malachi, which meaning Messenger of God.

We actually had some trouble with his middle name. Originally we were going to use James for the middle name, but FIL announced that he would just call him MJ. (None of our parents really cared for the name Malachi). While I don't mind nicknames, I really didn't like MJ. We have a family friend named MJ and its just too odd to have my kid be the same. So at the last minute we decided to go with my Dad's name Walter as his middle name. My dad didn't have any sons, so its kinda a way to carry on his name.

  • Jack Francis... Every Jack I knew ended up being the nicest people you'd meet. It's also classic and with our last name he sounds like a 1940's journalist or detective. He's also developing Jack Nicholson's eyebrows, so I think it's a good fit.

Francis is after my Grandfather. I lived with him for the first 10 years of my life. He was a firefighter and taught me everything he knew about gardening.
